Putters that sit perfectly? Tri-sole the answer?

CoolBreeze

Recommended Posts

I've become relatively sensitive to aligning the putter, ball position, and how I set up to the ball (where the ball is compared to my eyes). For me, getting consistency with these can sometimes be difficult as I sometimes fluctuate in how I set the putter on the green. I thought it had to do with the rounded cambering of the sole of my 2018 Newport 2. Sometimes I am slightly toe up, sometimes square, sometimes heel up. I was watching a Scotty Cameron video on tri-sole and he said the tour players say it "clicks" into place.

Question - is this true? Is it easier to know when its sits perfectly on the green? Any other putters out there that sit perfectly (trisole or not)? Thanks!

  • CoolBreeze changed the title to Putters that sit perfectly? Tri-sole the answer?

I find putters that are milled to spec on face loft sit the best, anything bent to spec I find could potentially rock a bit.

I do find and prefer a tri sole but if you have a proper spec'd putter with a camber sole it will still sit square but again the specs can come into play.

Tri soles aren't always the answer but having the correct lie angle typically is.

Interesting answer. Not something I thought of! Thank you!

I've also heard Scotty say that the wider sole on mid-mallets and mallets help it sit better. However, I had an original Spider and it sat awful so that is not always that case. I think JT, when he went to the Phantom 5.5, said it sat nice for him (if I remember the YT vid) but I haven't played around with any of the recent mallets so would not know.

With the Spider, if you positioned your hands just the left of your pant zipper (for rh golfer), the back of the putter was way off the ground.

So with mallets especially with ones that have the COG further back they will have a tendency to open up which is an issue with a lot of mallets.

I have found a tri-sole at my correct lie angle the easiest to sit square. No thinking required which is important for me.

The new Ping Oslo PLD sits very flat and square on the ground. I'm really liking it so far!

I would look into a Seemore if they made a model/shape you like.

The whole point of their design is to line up the putter correctly every time.

I know this many not be helpful but I have 3 custom trisoles and they also sit square.

I'm similar to you though...if i have a putter that sits closed I will never use it.

My seemore sits perfectly....even though it is a mallet it has a sort of tri sole aswell.

May I ask which tri-sole putters you have used?  The only one I really see available (without going custom) is the SC NP 2.

I have 3 with a pronounced tri-sole, all sit very flat and square to me. I prefer that to the "soft" tri-sole that Cameron used on the Special Select Newport. The most readily available is the Ping PLD Anser 2 off the rack version. I love how that sets up. I also have an older Cleveland TA Milled with a tri-sole and a very odd little mini Dale Head putter from John Byron that I picked up here not long ago. My favorite is the PLD.

Thanks for the response. I have to admit, I didn't think the PLD had a trisole. The pictures really don't show one. That being said, I also would prefer a more distinct tri-sole vs. "soft" variety. Not sure of the options out there but I saw Weston Maughan has an interesting one but that is definitely in the custom world. I'm not necessarily opposed to that, I was just hoping for an easy button.

Thanks for the options! The hosel design sees a bit weird for my traditional tastes but if I can find one in person, I will definitely check one out.

What customs do you have?

It’s hard to capture in photos but the PLD definitely has what I would categorize as more of a distinct tri-sole. You can kind of see it in this pic. The sole has 3 distinct sections.

I can totally see it. Thank you! They should market that!  You would think that is something that would sell more putters for them!!! I would have looked at this earlier if I would have known.

The best putter I know has had the same Scotty for 10 years. Same grip. Same cover. Never had a lesson. Doesn't know a single thing about equipment.

He takes his time, reads his putts, rarely hits a bad putt.

Check out the Axis1 putters that Justin Rose uses. He leads all players in strokes gained putting in the majors since he put one in play in 2019. The putters are designed to solve exactly what the OP is talking about. They are perfectly balanced, with the CG aligned with the shaft axis and on the precise center of the face.

None of the Axis1 putters flop open. Hosel looks different but it is part of the tech and why they work. Looks more refined on newer models.

The only problem I have with them is they feel really cheap when impacting the ball. Fix that and I’ll consider them.  Plus they need some fine tuning on the design to make them good looking.

Yes I have read that on the feel. Axis1 says it was the rear piece of the Rose Proto that was the issue and they have changed it. I have a no-obligation chance to demo an updated Rose on a course and I’m going to do it so I will share what I think. I have not rolled that one. I did roll the HM Tour head and it felt fine to me. Felt really good actually. Very impressive accuracy in the demo. I like putters that don’t fight the laws of physics.

Rose is now in his fifth season with it and he has become an annual stats leader in putting. It is a patented putter, one of the very few innovations in putters that makes a real difference. History shows that when the Anser came out in the 1960s, it was very different at the time and was widely mocked by pros — including the ‘Ping’ feel — but that changed over time based on performance. I believe if the Axis1 was not patented, the tech would immediately be copied. I definitely felt the HM Tour effortless to swing and hit my starting line.
