Golf & Trail Shoe Recommendations

Have a trip coming up and would like to pack light. Looking for a shoe recommendation you may have found particularly useful for both golf and light trails/hikes. 
 

Was considering grabbing a pair of trail runners, but not sure if they translate well enough for the course.

I rarely do any hiking these days, but I just wore a pair of Cole Haan golf shoes for over 12 hours to drive and show roses at the Tower Hill Botanical Gardens. 

I did some light hiking while waiting for the judges to do their thing. No discomfort at all.  Great multi-purpose shoes when I don't have the time to switch shoes. 

I spent more time reading a golf book than hiking.  I waited for the end of season sale.  I have four pairs of Cole Haan golf shoes.  I rotate between two of them. 

Occasionally use a third, and haven't found an occasion yet to wear the fourth. 

 

My most difficult hike, the Grand Canyon South Kaibob trail, was done with ordinary Nike sneakers. 

The challenge was going back up the trail before the thunderstorm in the distance reached me!

Re: the OP’s question, yes — trail running shoes do just fine for golf, particularly if you are someone without a huge leg drive in your swing. Trail runners sometimes won’t hold up as well as golf shoes over the course of a full season of play due to the lateral movement, but for a trip to pack really light they are a great idea. 
 

Get some Smartwool socks and a waterproof trail runner shoe. Salomon, Hoka, Brooks, Nike all have options depending on what works for your feet.

I bought a pair of Altra Lone Peak 6's with this particular idea in mind. I haven't tried the LP's for golf, yet. They are light weight, and, may not hold up for golf, but, they are great for walking, though a bit slippery on wet wood.

If you select the Trail shoecarefully it should work for your proposed application but I don't think it's a long term solution. As others have mentioned, due to the lateral movement of the golf swing and hiking or trail running shoes trending toward lightweight upper materials. 

 

You might try a golf shoe like Nike Air Max 1 ('86) (I wear those all day on many golf days) or an Ecco spikeless, but they may be slippery on wet trails... Nike's "G" line may be the best bet for lighter hikes. YMMV

Allbirds new golf dasher is built off their tree dasher platform with more grip and more structure in the upper. I have not tried them (yet) but plan to once my size is back in stock.

I wear On Running and Salomon trail running shoes 90% of the time nowadays. Unless it’s Dewey or raining, I have enough grip to play comfortably. Highly recommend picking a pair up for a trip. They’re also great airport, hiking, walking shoes too.

True linkswear. Have a few pairs of their zero drop shoes. Really nice toebox and grip. Started using them at the gym also.

Nobull Matrix Trail shoes. I think they’re the best looking option and Nobull makes some of the most comfortable, best quality shoes out there

Check out Adidas's Terrex line of trail shoes. I have a goretex pair from 3 or 4 years ago and they're my go to golf shoe for wet rounds early in the season.

The majority of trails out there do not require trail shoes. With that said, I'd check out the Nike Pegasus Trail if you want a shoe to cover both bases.
