Thoughts on the inside of the new P790?

Flyers are a product of strike location and swing, not inherently the iron model itself, though thin-face aka trampoline-face irons are more susceptible to it. Theres not much to cure about it as itll always happen when someone who doesnt strike the clubface perfectly, finally does.

Fascinating how different the internal construction is for each of the longer irons.

I would love to actually understand the real engineering principles and actual effects of the slight differences in the clubs. Like why the slight difference in shape/angle of the vertical bar? why does the 3i and 5i version look shape-wise more similar (triangular), though its clear they have moved the angle and the size, but the 4i is more slender? I trust they do what they're trying to do, but I'm just so curious how these minute details change certain club characteristics.

I’m guessing to an extent, but these things are always about weight distribution and relocation. You also have to remember the heads are foam injected, so those cavities are going to be filled in the production club. 
 

You don’t see many 790 3I in the wild, so I’m guessing it’s based on UDI performance characteristics. You might even disregard it as a piece of the set, design wise anyway. 
 

Everything else seems to make sense. Weight higher lower in the long irons and higher in the short irons, toe side to help perimeter weighting. The rest is probably stability related, based on the varying size, shape, and desired flex in the face of each club.

It’s a looong way from a traditional MB! The tech they are able to pack in and hide in a head these days is pretty phenomenal.

I’m guessing it wouldn’t be easy to find a RH model either. I haven’t looked, but a standard 790 player usually isn’t going to carry a 4i, much less a 3i. 
 

Based on what I can see and the ideas you can extrapolate from the general information we have available, the 3i looks to be designed with different performance characteristics than the rest of the set (i.e., a better player’s long iron replacement/utility club).

I have the previous generation (before these) #3 iron that is not a UDI. Set up the same as the other clubs in the set.
