Looking for recommendations for a course between Dublin and Killarney

Hey all, 

 

Searched but couldn't find this exact topic. Me and 3 others are going to Ireland next July. We're flying into Dublin and staying in Killarney. We'd like to play a course the day we land, ideally it'd be between Dublin and Killarney. We're all low single digit golfers looking for a warmup round. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Palmerstown House, or Heritage would be one the way. Both a really good parkland courses and would be a great place for a jet lag round. They are both reasonably priced as well. Adare Manor is “The Augusta if Ireland” and is on the way as well. Price is a premium but it is kept in perfect condition and will be hosting the 2027 Ryder Cup. If you’re wanting a links course, Tralee would be convenient as it’s not too far out of the way from Killarney. However, Tralee is my second favorite course in Ireland and it’s tough, so not sure it would be my choice to be my first round off the plane. Other choices for links golf would be The Island, or Corballis. Both are 10 mins from Dublin airport and they are next to each other. The Island is the better course, but my routine is to normally play Corballis off the plane. It’s a really fun par 66 course that has some really great holes along the coast and the perfect place to knock the rust off. On top of that, it’s only €35 versus The Island at €295.

I would have a think about playing Royal Curragh which is an historic course built in 1852 just on the south west side of Dublin. Won’t be the best course in Ireland but will be quite interesting as it adjoins the famous racecourse where they run the Irish Derby.

Portmarnock is <30 min from the airport. We went straight from the plane to the pro shop. Best way to fight jet lag

Personally, since you are making that drive, I would either take the M4 route and stop and play Esker Hills and you can stop and visit Tullamore Dew Distillery to start your drink on.

 

You could stop at the KClub if that interests you.  Adare Manor is a definite if willing to pay the $$ as noted above.  Heritage is a good course off the road a touch.

 

If just looking for a decent course to get swings in and relax - Castletroy or Ballyneety in Limerick are basic parklands that are fun to play.

 

Off the plane in short distance:  Corballis as mentioned, Carton House, Baltray - but then you have the long drive after.

Esker Hills is GREAT, and a hidden gem for sure. It’s Shane Lowry’s home course.

I'm personally not a fan of trying to play something really close to the airport and then having a 4 hour drive as you are starting to tire from the jetlag.  There are some really good courses in the Midlands that will suit your needs and get you closer to your final stop.  I like the idea of The Heritage.  Gets you out of Dublin and on your way.  It is close enough to the M7, so you can do a little mindless driving after your round.  M7/N21 are larger roads that will get you most of the way.  You'll be glad because the narrow N,R and Ls are taxing when you are getting tired.

+1 for Tralee, which wouldn't be too far off your journey. It's a wonderful course, not easy but very playable with amazing views and dramatic holes. It would be a must-play for me in the area. Nice clubhouse for a pint and a meal too.

 

I'm sure the interior courses are great, but I was dreaming about links golf for months before my trip.
