AVX alternative suggestions

Recommended Posts

During a recent fitting with Titleist I was recommended AVX to get my spin and launch down, and on average was 5 yards longer with a 7 iron over a pro v1. Where I'm slightly concerned is losing some driver yardage due to the lower compression. What else should I look at that might help improve both aspects of my golf?

Driver: PING G430 MAX 10K 9 Mitsubishi Diamana WB 43X

Chrome Soft. Same performance off irons, driver distance is good and it’s better around the green. Ive tried CSX and Prov1x but I come back on feel.

I have had my own concerns re: compression and distance off the tee (driver SS 112-115) with the AVX but I put it in play for a period of time and lost nothing alongside my usual gamers Left Dash and Bridgestone Tour BX. I simply prefer the firmer ball feel, but the AVX is plenty long!

I really should try it on course:). I just don't want to lose distance anywhere as I don't have any to lose!

Why are you worried about losing distance?  Yes, the AVX is softer so it has a bit less ball speed than, for example, the left dash, but according to the My Golf Spy 2023 ball test, the max difference they saw off of the driver was bout 2 mph.  But, the AVX flies much lower and spins less than the left dash.  So if you fight high ball flight and high spin with your driver then the AVX will probably end up being a longer ball for you even though you're losing a bit of ball speed.

If you did a ball fitting and that was the best option for you, then give it a try with an open mind.  And, by open mind I mean to give it a fair test over a few rounds at least... I see a lot of posts on here where someone hits one tee shot that ends up in a different position than usual and they immediately draw a conclusion about a particular ball being amazing or total crap.  There are so many factors that go into how far a drive travels in total that you really need to use a model for multiple rounds on course to see if it is doing what you want it to.

Titleist TSR4, 7.25*, Aldila Rogue Black 95 MSI 70 S
Titleist TS3, 14.25*, Speeder VC 8.2 Tour Spec X

Cleveland RTX6 54/12 (bent to 53*) Raw & 58/10 Black, DG Spinner
Piretti Potenza 1.5

The AVX is my preferred ball. The low launch and low spin allows it to roll out on tee shots, but ironically it actually launches very high with my irons. It also is a softer offering with a urethane cover for decent stopping power. Depending on your flight though, they have a pretty optimal descent angle, so I'm actually not overly concerned on spin rates. This information is also backed up by mygolfspy's 2023 ball test.

But I don't like having to pay $60 for a box so I have played a few rounds with cheaper alternatives.

I've learned that the AVX is going to outperform these, but the balls do offer similar characteristics:

- Maxfli Tour S

- Srixon Q Star Tour

- Vice Pro Soft

- Taylormade Tour Response

The list is ordered in which ball performs closest to the AVX.

But if your concern is distance, I've learned I could play a very firm ball in hotter months like the Srixon Z Star XV or the Pro V1x left dash. With a SS around 100mph, they're both ball speed monsters but keep the spin low just like the AVX. Launch might differ but for me personally, it's spin that kills my distance.

that's interesting you put the tour response in there. I thought it was much softer and higher launching ?

I guess I only put it there because it's a softer offering with a urethane cover that's lower spinning off the tee. Not many OEMs have that in their arsenal, regardless of the ball's performing characteristics.

  • 1 month later...

I would take a look at the Bridgestone Tour B RXS and Taylormade Tour Response.

Driver = Callaway Smoke-Ai Max-D

3 wood = Callaway Smoke-Ai Max HL

3 Hybrid = Tour Edge Exotics C722
Irons = 4-PW Miura KM 700
Gap Wedge = Miura HB 50*

Sand Wedge = Taylormade MG2 56*

Putter = LAB DF3

Ball = TP5x pix / Bridgestone Tour B-X
