Who's playing MUCH older (10+ years) equipment with no impact to score?

I always felt like if you could shoot par with all new equipment, you could do the same with a rental club. If you've been using a set of clubs for a good amount of time and you know your misses, then it comes down to getting in a groove, having the short game bail you out and sinking a few putts. I guess fitting and tech (lower shaft weights) is gonna help when you are losing distance...

That said. My primary irons are 20 years old on the button. They have TTDG so a shaft that is basically timeless. Wedges are a few years old - they have no special design other than milled grooves... Woods? G400 D, Royal Collection Ti 4w (basically the old Sonartec design). I have a good idea where the ball is going to go with everything and I feel like I can play any course agressively from tee to green. What more do you want?

Nice!  Line-over Tour Blades for me.  No way I'm good enough to be hitting them, but they look so pretty in the bag!

I love my 17s and don’t find them hard to hit. Have a spare set of them as well, but they have no grips on them. Spare set cost me $58 for 4-PW in nice shape! 😁

What’s the tour issue 11 hybrid? That sounds interesting

It's a deeper face tour only proto.  Supposedly spins less than the retail version.  Picked it up from Will Peoples a long time ago.

Never tried the 17's but experimented with a lot of other old Wilson blades including Button Backs, Bullet Backs, '76's, 88-89's and even Sam Snead Signatures.    Line Overs were by far the easiest to hit for a half-hacker like myself.   To the question raised by the OP, I would say that there is probably very little difference between the results you get from old vs. modern blades.  I suppose there is some technology involved, but how many ways can you improve a solid hunk of metal at the end of a stick?

Irons...Ping I10, Ping S59, Titleist 704.cb

Hybrids...Sonartec MD, Titleist 585H

Fairways ...Sonartec NP-99, Ping Tisi Tec, Titleist 904F and 909F2

Wedges.....Ping Tour 50/54/58, Vokey special grind 60-P

Putter----Odyssey #9

I score about the same with any of my equipment and don't see much difference with anything I demo.  I think the 2 most important thigs are the quality of your swing and using clubs you are comfortable with.

Irons from 2010, wedges 2015, they perform better than anything new I’ve tested for me.  Love the looks, feel, and results, top end of the bag is a different story.

  • 1 month later...

My performance with driver started going downhill all summer, so much so, that I had to take it out of the bag and just go with my u505s.  Recently remembered my old King Cobra 454 Comp driver so I decided to give it a go, and suddenly I can now hit fairways more othen.  I may not hit it as far but I'll take more fairways hit anytime.
