Scotland in March

Recommended Posts

So my wife has a work trip to Scotland in early March 2024 and I was thinking I may tag along and play a bit. I know some courses close for the season and some require fairway mats or things like that.

Can anyone recommend courses on the west side of the country that don’t have any restrictions like that? We’ll be in Loch Lomond area, but I’d be willing to drive a bit, ideally an hour or less though.

Will you have a car? If so, how far are you willing to drive? Are you looking for links courses or parkland?

Yeah I’ll get a car and I’d like to keep the driving to about an hour or less each way.

Would prefer links over parkland.

I’m fine with facing the cold and the potential elements, but I want to avoid restrictions like playing off mats in the fairway.

Are you staying at the Loch Lomand resort?

The best links courses in that area would be Troon, Prestwick, Western Gailes, and West Kilbride. Not sure what their winter rules are but they are all around an hours drive from Loch Lomand.

You also have Dundonald which is right next to Western Gailes. It’s a “modern” links resort.

A few years ago I spent a week in Ayrshire in early March. None of the courses required mats, although policies may have changed. Call before you book to check.

Prestwick and Western Gailes were my favorites. Prestwick was fun and quirky on a  great rolling  links property with some fune dunes holes including the famous blind Himalayas and Alps holes.

I though almost every hole at Western Gailes was fun, interesting and challenging.rx Those would be my first two choices. If you want something a little less expensive play Glasgow Gailes. It's right next to Western Gailes and Dundonald. Glasgow Gailes is fun and the members are very welcoming.
