**Players Iron Advice** - '23 Callaway Apex CB vs Titleist 620 CB

Recommended Posts

How do these compare in feel and forgiveness? I want a players CB with a lead edge grind because I'm shallow and get along very well with this style. My miss tends to be thin. Forged feel is very important to me, I don't necessarily need the softest iron, but I'm easily put off by higher pitch sounding clubs. Even the Titleist T100 are a bit too "techy" sounding to me because of the tungsten. Open to other suggestions other than the subject line irons. Thanks in advance!

Thin miss, and shallow sounds like me, which is exactly why I'm in the Apex CB. Very good for my shallow aoa.  Buttery soft dense feel.  Takes nice little divots.  Can't speak to the 620's but have heard great things.

Curious to get feedback on this topic. I currently have 620 CBs in the bag, but work for a company that has a partnership with Callaway with discounted cost on equipment.  I don’t NEED to switch, but it would be unprofessional not to support our partners, right????

(secretly looking for excuses to buy new gear)

Recently switched from MP20 to Apex TCB after looking at 620 CB and Apex CB amongst others.  I play a lot of tighter/firmer turf courses similar to Texas here in Australia.  The Apex CB would've went into my bag over the 620 CB based on both feel and turf interaction.  I found they also launched about a degree higher with less spin, which I prefer as we get quite a few windy days on the coast.

I know it's tough to find demo gear as a lefty, but get a 7i of each to test at your home course and you can figure out what you prefer.

Great insight. What was your reason for ultimately going TCB? I hit those in store today and they felt great and were pretty forgiving for a players iron. I prefer the look of the new CBs a lot more though.

Turf interaction and overall dispersion were the main factors.  I am pretty straight with my stock shots, so I want to know the front to back variance is minimal.  The leading edge grind of the CB gets into the softer turf areas easier and I wasn't liking the feeling of longer thin divots.  The TCB gives me an in and out divot that's a few inches.

As a side note, these are the first 3i & 4i that I feel confident hitting all my shots when needing to shape it because I'm out of position.

Which one between the CB and TCB felt more forgiving?

That's pretty much a wash at my level as we're talking about millimetres with strike.  They're both amazing irons so I'd say it's the one you feel most confident with.  Imagine hitting a shot over water and which iron you would rather grab, then you know which one to trust.

New Wilson Staff CB irons are another good option.

Big fan of the new Wilsons. And they offer no up charge KBS TGI graphite shafts, even the heavier weights. Have not seen a lot of OEMs offer TGI 100 and 110 as a free upgrade. The 110 TGI is a seriously stiff shaft.

The Callaway MMT offer is limited weights and flexes. The 105 is only in tour x flex and the 125 is not offered. The TGI is a $60 per club up charge. I would take the Callaway CB over the Titleist. Close, really down to preference.

Althought not in the CB - this was a major reason I upgraded to the 24 Pros in December.  Had been playing KBS Tour V which was a great shaft, but really liking the 105 MMT TX.

I would look at the Cobra CB's as well. Great iron for a picker that wants a touch more forgiveness than a blade. The best iron I ever played was the 18 MB Callaways for me as my AOA with a 7iron is 0. lol.. Picker here for sure...

I love my 2018 Apex MBs. They are great irons for somebody with a shallow swing and good for thin misses. However the previous version of the Wilson Staff MB irons staff CB and V6 irons are even better than the Apex MB irons for the thin miss.

I’d venture to say the current t100 is the best thin strike iron I’ve ever hit.  It’s got most of its mass very low in the club head.

I actually got better launch and spin with a thin miss than I did with what I felt was like a flushed strikes (and excess spin and the ball apexed too high)

The blueprint s and Wilson cb were also very good for me and thin strikes and a much more playable ball flight on flushed shots.
