Why does Mizuno pair certain shafts with their irons?

Recommended Posts

I guess this question could apply to all manufacturers but since I'm interested in Mizuno 243s, my question is this...   Is there a playability/functionality reason why the stock shaft is the Tour Modus 120, vs others such as DGS300 for example?

Are there specific reasons why this shaft works best with this head or is it just what shaft company might lobby to have their's as the default?

I imagine it’s based on a shaft they think will pair with the “typical player” said iron is aimed at. For example, the jpx93 hot metal stock shaft is probably something they assume is suited best for a higher handicapper vs the shaft in an MP241 is a shaft more suited for low handicapper. But who really knows what goes on in the minds of some manufacturers decisions..

Thanks for the input.  So most likely, it would make sense to assume that the shaft one has been using comfortably for may years would continue to be the right shaft for these or other irons.

On a personal note every time I go down the road of exploring a new shaft for irons, the data and dispersion always leads me back to the same shaft.

Thanks again.

FWIW I was gaming 923F with DG105 S300’s and have MP245 arriving any day now with DG105 S300’s. I loved the shaft in my 923’s so that’s why I went that route in the 245.

FYI: the lined out material is nonsense.

Keep in mind that the shaft is about half the golf club. The stock shaft(s) for each model are the one or two tube models the designers think will fit most users of that iron head.

Often OEM will let you swap out stock shafts across iron models for no upcharge. Case in point - Callaway and my Mav MAX irons.

  • MAX stock: PX Catalyst 55/65/75 (graphite) and KBS Max 80 (steel)
  • Mavrik stock: PX Catalyst 55/65/75 and TT Elevate (steel)
  • Apex DCB stock: UST MAMIYA RECOIL DART 65 GRAPHITE and TRUE TEMPER ELEVATE MPH 85 STEEL and TT XP95 Steel (second wave)

I was fitted for the MAXs, and tried in detail both the Catalyst and Recoil Dart 65. I liked the Catalysts better, but could have selected that Dart 65 at no additional cost. You just have to talk to the OEM rep, see what flexibility you have.

Among the OEMs, Ping and Tour Edge are fairly flexible in swapping around shafts. Options for their iron models:

Mizuno is well known for their fitting with Swing DNA and such stuff. it was one of the first companies with a really huge selection of different shafts. and further more, a lot of those shafts are no-upcharge-shafts

so there was probably no special agreement with any shaft manufacturer to promote one shaft over another. it is more what the company thinks, what the target player for a specific club is looking for in therms of weight and ballflight

in terms of woods I do think that the R&D is specific looking for a good combination of head / shaft in terms of results for the target player as well.

I do business in JPN.  Their business culture is deeply rooted in supporting Japanese businesses first, therefore Mizuno is definitely going to align their products with a JPN manufactured shaft from Nippon.  By the way Nippon is a very well respected producer of exotic alloys and specialty steels, with excellent quality control, so this pairing is a no brainer.

mizuno

245 = DG 115

243 = Modus (105?)

241 = KBS Tour

923T = DG 120

hot metal = kbs tour lite, dg 105

Seems like those are shafts that would fit the target player. Just like titleist below.

Titliest

100 = amt white

150 = project x lz

200 = amt black
