Should i play 3w or 5w

A bit unrelated to the topic: is your course at elevation? Multiple 700-yard par 5s is insane. That’s longer than PGA Tour length par 5s. The only courses I’ve heard of with holes that long are in Colorado at 5,000 feet.

 

To answer your question, I’m increasingly of the opinion that most players only need either a 3 or a 5 wood, not both. There’s maybe two holes per round where I could use a 3 wood off the fairway, and in most of those situations I don’t think it’d make a difference if I used my 19* Apex UW instead because I’m not holding a green with a 3w from 240yds out anyways.

Would be interested to see if the results for 3Ws would be noticeably different/better if the majority of people put a 3W head in a 5W length shaft.

Funny you mention 17*  The 2024 release of the Hy-Wood comes in 17* 3+ and 20* 4+.  My prior release Hy-Wood is 18* 3+.  I'm thinking of going to the 17* 3+ HW, 20* 4+ HW and 24* Halo XL 5 H,  eliminating the 4W, 18* Hy-Wood, 21* HyWay and DST Hybrid.  maybe keep the 4W and Hy-Wood, getting a Halo XL 5H and eliminating the HyWay and DST.   I'm already reducing from the 52*-56*-60* wedge setup to the Maltby Max Milled 54*-58*.  My irons are the PXG XCor2 6-GW.  Tired of carrying 14-15 clubs in my bag (I'll take 15 clubs on a casual round to try out different combinations).

 

I hate golf.........

I'm playing on Sunday and Thursday........Imagine if I actually liked the sport.

4W - 7W is the new 3W - 5W

I don't have the speed of op, but I have a similar situation with my home course. I don't have many long approaches or shots that would require a 3w, so I have a 5 wood. I find it does very well off the deck, I haven't used it off the tee enough yet to make an informed opinion. Someone mentioned that nowadays you really only need one or the other and I think that's true.

 

While the 5w itself is new, I generally have had a 17°~ club that is the longest club for trying to hold a green.

Lofted down 5w and Standard loft 7w is how I roll.

I went on a practice round last week with an extra club. Bought a 56* as am intending playing half set at some point but ended up

never hitting it and using my 54 and 59* 🤣🤣🤣🤣.
