Anyone switch from traditional Newport Style to Plumbers Neck Mallet?

TillyGolf

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! Looking for some feedback on those who have made the switch from a traditional plumbers neck blade (newport style) to a plumbers neck/L-neck mallet design? After rolling many putters over the years I've settled quite firmly on the plumbers neck as I like how it sets me up to the ball and the ease of alignment. My Piretti Potenza 2 can be rather demanding at times so I've just ordered a Scottie Scheffler myspider with the L neck/plumbers neck. Curious if anyone has done the same and found better results with the increased MOI/stability? Having rolled a blade for years I think it could be a tough adjustment to make but I've always enjoyed the spider models and how easy they are to line up.

Ya know ya can get a mallet with a neck other than plumbers that will give you the toe hang of your blade too.   Might be worth checking out.

I have. Double bend (face balanced), short slant, long slant, flow neck. etc. I didn't get along well with them, so I'm specifically interested in the plumbers neck options as those seem to be a little less common when it comes to mallets. cheers

Gotcha

yah I have a few variations including a plumbers neck.  I prefer a slant/jet neck that gets me closer to a blade hang.

I think it’s a lot of just personal preference.

Definitely boils down to personal preference. I didn't mind the short slant/jet neck as well but seem to prefer the plumbers neck. Mostly just curious who's made the switch and if they still game the mallet or went back to the blade. My Piretti is a heavy blade at 375g so I find myself fighting the weight a little/feels unstable at times? Could just need a lighter plumbers neck blade. Ho's gotta ho though 🤷‍♂️

I have played a traditional putter for years - mainly a 350Milled for a long time. A couple of years ago I switched to an Odyssey, and late last year, I moved to a Cleveland Huntington Beach Soft Premier 11S putter. Not exactly what you are asking, but it's close. And I am putting in better than I have in a long time.

Interesting.
I always equate heavier with more stable. Lol crazy game.

there’s always something better 🤣

From short range I think the added weight helps and keeps her stable but from long range its like swinging a dumbbell on the end of a shaft, just doesn't feel overly smooth haha. Sure is a crazy game, I'll report back with the findings from this latest spider experiment

I had this one, the Spider Platinum S L-neck released a few years ago,

and it was great. Very stable with the back weight bar. The design of the alignment lines is also a big plus. I thought it was easier to aim than the face-balanced version.

I too am a longtime plumber neck user.   Tried a couple of slant neck models and while they seem to work in the store it hasn't carried over to grass for me.

I've had the most mallet success with a plumber neck 2 ball blade.   Have tried #7/Tyne fang style with plumber neck and haven't had much luck.

Wound up splitting the difference and gaming a double depth anser style.

Also interested in this as a long time blade user

Might be placing an order for a MySpider Tour with the L neck, but I sent them an email to inquire if they're able to offer lighter weights (or at least an adjustment in swing weight)

Let me know if they get back to you on that. I'm excited to get my L neck myspider in. Hoping it isn't too difficult of a transition from the blade

I'm with you there. Always rolled the short slant spiders well in stores and then it never translated to the grass. Plumbers neck seems to be the key for me so I'll commit to that...for now... haha

I went from my Newport/newport two style to a phantom x5.5 for a while. Same toe hang in the model I had, but my lag putting suffered tremendously. I either made the putt, left it well short or blew it past. I jumped from 29-31 putts a round average to 34-36 putts a round when I was looking for the other direction. So I went back to my blades as my lag putting is miles better even if I don’t hole as many long putts now.

The X5.5 was just the latest in a long line of mallets I’ve tried and wanted to work, but didn’t. Mallets work for some people and don’t for others. You’ll only know by trying them.

Yep, NP2 and OGWH7. Nothing changed between the two, setup-wise or stroke-wise. The 7 didn’t replace the NP2 by any means, but it’s certainly more forgiving. The side benefit has been I putt better with the NP2 now. I did a slight counter balance with the 7 and it’s just so smooth. Got wild and ended up adding 55g in the shaft and a 91g grip to the NP2 and its dynamite. Pretty much just pick one depending on what mood I’m in.

Zero interest in messing with any other putters now.

Easy answer: yes.

Longer answer: I got fit into a 7 T CH. swapped it due to it feeling more firm than any Cameron I’ve had in the bag at any point. Went to try the new Phantom line and was handed a 7 T DB with the Bimatrix SL70 navy shaft and wow was it nice. It made the head feel like a milled putter should feel like, a soft yet solid sensation at impact. It really comes down to having a top line alignment aid since my eye goes straight to where the face meets the ball but if I use anything naked on the top line, I am inconsistent. It’s no different than a flange alignment aid only; it’s very hit, miss.

I'm with you there. Any putter with a topline aid has seemed very easy to aim and roll for me. Would love to get my hands on an SC Newport with a topline but that could be a while and be rather pricey..... I think I'll love the Scheffler setup in this spider. Fingers Crossed!

If ever the #7 starts to fade on me, I’m going to try the Spider Tour X in the L-Neck. I do love how it looks at address and I could use it. It was second in line during my fitting. Good luck with yours.
