Golfworks Tour Set Epoxy Plus... shelf life? What am I missing here?

I can't find anything on the golfworks website, but does this stuff lose it's effectiveness after a given time? 

I recently re-shafted my Maltby TS3's into some Nippon N.S. Pro 1050GH pulls.  Yes, I have re-shafted many shafts in the last 20 years.  I have had to re-glue maybe 2 or 3 shafts ever after installing.  However, 3 of the 6 of these that I did within the last three weeks have failed, and I've barely hit the other 3, so they might fail next.  I'm using the Tour Set Epoxy Plus, which I have been using for years now, and this tube was purchased last spring, so it isn't that old.  Plus, I have assembled a number of clubs with it in the last year with no other issues.  The only thing I've noticed is that the tips on the 1050's were not roughed up real well, so I've been hitting them with the sanding belt more before I re-assemble them.  I clean out the hosels by hand, then use a wire brush in my drill before cleaning with acetone on a Q-tip.  What else am I missing here that could cause these to fail?  If it was just one, I would chalk it up as a fluke, but this is baffling me.

Your process is sound & you've been reshafting for a lot longer than I have!

 

My clear 4oz bottles of Tour Set Plus Epoxy from December '23 are still doing fine as of a reshaft I finished today (~bottles open for 5 months). I've kept the bottles indoors/climate-cooled & out of direct sunlight. Doing fine with eyeballing the 1:1 mixture (vs weight) & have had 0 failures across 20+ clubs I've done with this epoxy. I would not expect the black version to function differently than clear.
 

If you are around the year point - it sounds like your epoxy may have spoiled/expired. I've used Bob Smith Industries Slow Cure epoxy for other projects & I generally expect once opened, I've got around a year (if not a little more) to use it up, even with proper storage.

 

Wanted to double check the gut... Found on Golfworks website-

I would say the rule of thumb is 1 year.  I've used older epoxy than that and rarely have had a failure though.

Personally I toss a bottle and buy a new one if it is over 3 months old. Not for any reason other than I don’t know how long it lasts but figure for a few dollars every few months (if the bottles even last that long) I’m using fresh epoxy.

This is why I always buy the smallest quantity. I use it once or maybe a couple times and then toss the remainder out.

This post should be a sticky!  Tour Set epoxy failure!!!  I've read this here at least a dozen times before!  Don't use that junk.  

 

BTW, you should be using a sanding sleeve on a rotating mandrel inside the hosel before bonding.  The wire brush just smears contaminants into the hosel wall, it doesn't remove them.

Yes.  I buy the arbor and a bag of sanding sleeves from Amazon.  Get 1/4" diameter sleeves, with a 1/8" ID arbor.

Is tour set the stuff that cures in 24 hours or is it the one that is suppose to cure more quickly?

It’s set in 4 hours, fully cured in 24 hours.

Can you share a link?  I’m having trouble with the sleeves I ordered from Billy Bob’s.  They fall off the mandrel and get stuck in the hosel.  They seem to be too big.

Is there anything wrong with the golfworks one?  For how little I do, the mandrel and 5 strips of the sand paper for $8.99 seems like the logical deal.  If I was a shop going through a lot of repairs, the bulk orders on Amazon would certainly pay off in the long run.

Nothing wrong with it.  Just don't use the cartridge rolls to death.  They can't clean the metal properly if they are all contaminated with grunge.

I use the golfworks spirals.  To extend their life and effectiveness, you can brush them out to remove the residue when they start to clog.  Also, they last longer and work just as well in my opinion if you keep your drill at a lower speed.  Especially so when prepping hosels vs cleaning, as you are looking to abrade the inside, not polish it.
