Wilson Golf Product Testing and Fitting Experience @ Pinehurst | Following Along Here

I can’t get over how amazing this experience was for all you guys!  Wilson is doing an incredible job of trying to get their equipment out there and this event is only helping their cause.  This is going to be one of those experiences you never forget.  
 

Outside if the equipment, they have made this quiet push on their clothing as well and they look really great!

 

Kudos to all the members that were part of such an incredible experience.  Hopefully, Wilson continues to push the envelope with their marketing team.

Wish we had more pictures. I saw someone asking why they didn’t get putters. Heck, I’d think by now some of the folks who got all that merch would send pictures of something other than dinner and a fairway. The bags are awesome BTW. Love that Wilson’s getting the respect it deserves.

I’d love to see more shots of what the guys got in their bags. Not much conversation or pictures of the woods. Interested in the DPForged and the ZM wedges. Didn’t mean to be critical but expected to see more shots of guys hitting shots, the swag and more of all I guess

From someone who has been on one of these trips. The itinerary is jam packed and very little time to get a lot of fittings and education part in.  

 

I believe they first saw snd got their clubs (unexpectedly so) on the range the morning of the round and day of departure.  Thats a lot to digest just before a big round. 
 

Also during the rounds it’s really tough to concentrate and keep up the pace while worrying about posting.  Which is also usually complicated by sketchy wireless service in some remote areas which Pinehurst definitely is. 
 

Also upon returning home real life, wife, kids and work backlogs await.  
 

While participating in forum activity during the trip is expected.  It can bd very hard to meet the expectations of those of is sitting around our computers or phones all day wanting more 😬

 

I think they did a great job and of course welcome any additional WITB pics they want ti share when time permits.

LOL!  They are a lot of fun. But they can also be exhausting.  I was lucky our trip was 3 days and 4 nights.  But still on the go from early AM to late night BS sessions. 
 

BTW that was like 11 years ago, so I’m totally rested up for another opportunity.  Just sayin 😬

Try to remember we don’t have our final set…or at least I don’t.  I have a split set of CB and Dynapower forged …but they are split in the wrong place and wrong shaft.  Also the woods are changing.  
You may recall we were all fit about 800 miles from the Wilson HQ.  There is no way they could have had all of the possible head and shaft combinations we would be fit for.

 

My plan is to post pictures of those clubs when they arrive.  In addition much of the swag is in my previous golf bag-which is headed to me on UPS from Pinehurst.

This is going to be a lot of photos, sorry in advance. If anyone wants anything else, please let me know. Tried to capture the ZM grooves as best as I could. My 3 wood was damaged in assembly, so just pretend you don't see that. Irons include P, 7, and 5 in that order. Also, if you want wedge address pics let me know and I'll go brave the same heat the LIV boys are today for a few more snaps.

I see some F, S and D grind in the middle to higher bounce options, but not sure where 58.06 and 60.06 falls or rather how it plays? 
 

Not sure if a comparison do them justice or is the way to go…. But would  appreciate any insight or impression! Thanks!

My Vokeys will be back tomorrow and I can do some side by sides. I’m very confident in throwing these straight in the bag though. They keep it simple with low, medium, and high bounce options. They gave me a mid 56 (bent to 55, currently playing a 54° Vokey bent to 55°) that has the same 12° (11° because of being bent) as my Vokey, and a 60° with 6° of bounce. The 60° is super versatile with its grind that I tried to highlight above. It sits open nicely, and is really nice off the tighter lies that I’ll play here. Still want to spend more time with them side by side, but I think it’ll be an easy switch. They’re also cheaper than most other wedges on the market, which is an added benefit.

Thinking about whether a ZM 58.06 bent two degrees weak might do the trick. Sounds like it might work.

I noticed the driver has carbon on the toe, but not the heel.     Wilson states this model is pretty neutral in bias - do you find that to be the case?

I haven't heard much about their fairway woods. It seems like you guys weren't necessarily fit for those.  How are you liking it?   Do you find it to be fairly neutral in ball flight as well?

the funny thing is that Both I and @TM golf guy brought cameras and I even bough external mics to try and capture everything to share with you all.  When we pulled up and saw the production crew hired by GolfWRX I didn’t even bother with my setup. Honestly I’m thrilled they did that for us because it allowed us to really enjoy the experience and live in the moment rather than trying to just around and document everything on our own. I assure you the content is coming my friend :).

I had been playing the 60M as well I found it doubtful the ZM wedge would be better.  But, quite frankly for me it is.  It has just a bit more trail relief which means it still has the bounce but when I open it up and lean it back a hair the lead edge stays nearer the turf than did the Vokey.

I have the 60-06 and it’s similar to a Vokey T grind, maybe a touch less demanding. The 56-10 plays very similar to a Vokey S grind.

I would say it’s neutral but the face sits a little more shut than I’d like. I wasn’t fighting hooks but rather the ball starting a little too far left.

 

The Wilson team was buzzing about what’s next.

I was fit into the 10.5* head lofted down 1* and didn't notice the head being closed with that setup.  I only hit the fairway woods a handful of times on the range that morning and 2 times on the course.  Neither of the strikes on the course were good enough to get a feel for so I'll have to report back.  

 

After our round they had us pack everything up so they can ship alot of the clubs back to us so we didn't have to try and fit them all in our checked bag. 

 

Once I get all my other old woods back I'll have more side by side photos and thoughts for you all.

Coming from someone who does writing, photo and video work for a living I can attest that Wilson hiring professionals to do it was a brilliant move as it allowed you as GolfWRX testers to focus on the product and less on trying to capture every little thing for the group (even though that technically usually comes with the territory for these).

 

For Wilson and Pinehurst there is more value in them giving WRX members a stress-free experience so that they can turnaround and talk about it. Inevitably this will increase bookings and sale via word of mouth alone.

 

I think this is why from a conversational standpoint the forum has been well engaged because the testers could speak to their experience as forum members have asked questions. Especially when considering most simply want to know how Wilson stacks up to other brands. GolfWRX also did a great job at selecting a diverse age range, handicap range and range of golfers with various brand loyalty.
 

With all of this variation there is surely something for everyone to get out of those that attended the Pinehurst/Wilson trip.
 

This is not to say that I am not also looking forward to the pictures and videos from the Wilson team. But it has been nice to ask questions about Wilson and have people actually be able to respond aboth the product.

Oh up yours with the age range! 🤣 /s   Except for Ed…the tour fitter for Wilson…everyone else from Wilson was mid 30’s as were @TLUBulldogGolf @TM golf guy & @Olson12.  There were times, especially during the driver fittings, that I felt out of place at 67. However, luckily for me golf nerds pretty much know no age so it was a fantastic experience none the less.  @TM golf guy was injured but watching @TLUBulldogGolf and @Olson12 driver test was humbling.  I’m trying to one hop into the screen at the end of the range and they were flying it.

 

Something to strive for I guess.😎

Just kidding! I honestly thought it was 30s, 40s and 50s! 😂 Hell I could have been in my 80s and would have been dragging my old a** around Pinehurst and bombing 220 yard drives that felt like 300. And @Shilgy thanks for reminding me of another demographic @TM golf guy was handicapable!

Alright, here's my day 3cbreakdown: "The Reveal" 

 

We had an 8 AM tee time, but as is often the case with big group travel, we started the morning a little behind schedule. @Shilgy and I were car-mates since we both traveled from Arizona together. We packed our bags and loaded up our individual minivans, heading to the course around 7 AM and arriving just after 7:15. Hilgy and I followed @knudson81, but our GPS took us on a different route, and we ended up at the maintenance shed. Fortunately, a kind worker guided us to the parking lot at the bottom of the drive leading to the temporary clubhouse of No. 10.

 

This is when the reality of our final surprise started to set in. We had the entire course to ourselves. Wilson had booked a two-hour window for us to warm up and tee off without any other players around. It felt like we owned the entire course. My first stop was the pro shop—I couldn't return home without gifts for my wife and son, who's newly addicted to golf. I picked up a scorecard, headcover, T-shirt, rain jacket with the No. 10 logo, and a couple of hats. Spending a few hundred bucks in the pro shop felt like money well spent.

 

On our way to the shop, I noticed the @Wilson_Golf staffers setting up four beautiful white golf bags. I couldn't help but hope there was something in there for us. Up until this point, we expected our clubs to be built at HQ and shipped to us after the event. I even spoke with a team member about another upcoming trip I had, hoping to get the irons in time. She played it cool, saying she would do her best but couldn't guarantee they'd be ready within a week. So when we arrived, I assumed our gamers had been moved to cool new bags and we'd get the clubs in the mail. Well, I was wrong! Ed Garland is a magician. After our iron and driver fitting, Ed claimed he had to leave for the airport for another event. But in reality, he went to the clubhouse at No. 2 and started building our entire bags from scratch so we could use them on the course with the Wilson crew. We arrived at the range to find custom Vessel bags with our names and the Wilson logo, along with two dozen golf balls (Wilson Staff and Staff X) and more swag (Seamus valuables pouch, scorecard holder, gloves).

 

Although we didn't get fitted for woods, our new bags contained 13 brand new clubs built to our specs based on what they brought. They promised that if we didn't like something or wanted a different option, the Wilson team would build and send it to us the following week. They were too excited about the product line to let us play without some version of their clubs on this trip.

 

I was fortunate that the clubs I was fitted for were part of the selection they brought, so I played with the driver, irons, and wedge combo they fitted me for. They even built my wedge to match the set of SM9s I brought, bending them to get the right bounce profile.

 

My set: 

Driver:  Wilson Dynapower Carbon 10.5* -1* on the adapter with Project X Denali 60g Stiff

Woods: (not fit but a nice surprise) Wilson Dynapower 3 & 5 wood with Velocore Blue 7x 

Irons: 4-PW Wilson Staff CB with Steelfiber 110x Soft Stepped 1 time.

Wedges: Wilson ZM 48* bent to 50*, 52* bent to 54* and 60* 

 

Again they recorded EVERYTHING here so you will be seeing our genuine surprise very shortly.  

 

I'm going to post some photos here and write up details of my round on another post as I think thats going to be a long one for sure.

Day 3: "The Round"

 

I was paired up with @TLUBulldogGolf and 2 Wilson staffers (Harry and Matt)

 

We met our caddies on the putting green and exchanged pleasantries. Their first question was about which tee box we wanted to play. Harry and AJ are both + handicaps, Matt is a scratch, and I'm a 4. When Harry told them we intended to play the back tees, they didn't seem too thrilled. The course is only six weeks old, so they've only had a handful of rounds on it themselves, but they assured us it would be a test of our skill. We approached the starter, who also recommended we play up a box for a better experience.

I’m all for having fun and would have happily played the most forward tees at this point, but Harry and Matt didn't give in to the pressure, so to the back tees we went. I'll focus on my round and experience, but here are some quick highlights: Harry shot a 1-under 69, with a 3-putt bogey on a 264-yard par 3, a missed 4-footer for birdie on No. 18, and a lipped-out eagle putt on the 634-yard par 5 after going driver, 3-wood to 10 feet. Matt shot around 74, and AJ finished in the 70s, much prettier than my round.

 

**No. 1: 447-yard par 4**

The pressure was real. After the back-and-forth with the starters, the last thing I wanted was to step up with a brand new driver and top it. I mentioned to the group that I've organized countless WRX events in Arizona, and almost every time I get on the tee box in front of everyone, the result is less than ideal. I hit a good drive left of the fairway into the pine straw but made good contact. Off to a great start! I had to hit a punchy 7-iron through a tight window, leaving my second shot short right in front of the green. A decent chip and two putts later, I was +1.

 

**No. 2: 182-yard par 3**

This hole played into the wind. Our caddie, Ryan, told us to play a 200-yard shot to the middle of the green. Nothing like pulling out a 5-iron on the second hole. I had @knudson81 record my tee shot, and I pureed the 5-iron, landing pin-high and rolling out to about 15-20 feet. Two putts, and I stayed +1.

 

**No. 3: 555-yard par 5**

I don't remember much about this hole. I hit the fairway, overshot the green, chipped well, and made a great putt to get up and down for par. Still +1.

 

**No. 4: 342-yard par 4**

A cool par 4 with a risk-reward factor. I pushed my tee shot right into the pine needles/native area. My ball had a tough lie next to one of the native bushes. I managed to get good contact with a 9-iron, landing on the green but rolling through to the fringe. Two putts for par, still +1.

 

At this point, I started thinking, "What's all the fuss about? This course isn't too long or hard." I challenged the golf gods, and they answered over the next 14 holes.

 

**No. 5: 400-yard par 4**

Missed the fairway left with the driver, missed the green long, duffed a chip, chipped close, and one-putted. Now +2.

 

**No. 6: 489-yard par 4**

Hit a great drive, outdrove AJ for the first and last time of the day. On the right side of the fairway, there was a HUGE tree about 50 yards ahead. I usually play a cut, so I wasn't worried. The wind was blowing left to right, but I overcooked it, missing the green right. Poor chip shot, two putts, and now +3.

 

**No. 7: 150-yard par 3**

I don't remember much here except I hit a good 8-iron into the wind, landing on the green. Two putts for par, still +3.

 

**No. 8: 385-yard par 4**

This is their signature hole, with double blind shots if you're on the left, aka the "WRONG" side. My first attempt with the new 5-wood was a moonball deep to right field. Not knowing what was over there, I had high hopes but no luck finding my ball. So, if you play No. 10, feel free to hunt for Wilson Staff X with a green line & GolfWRX logo. Dropped one on the edge of the fairway, hit the green on my fourth shot, and two-putted for a double bogey. +5.

 

There is no halfway house yet, but the beverage cart was waiting at No. 9 tee box with goodies. I opted for an Uncrustable and some Spicy Cajun Pinehurst Trail mix.

 

**No. 9: 468-yard par 4**

This hole is visually intimidating. I hit a decent drive down the middle of the fairway, but there happened to be a bunker right there. We played as a five-ball, with a late surprise for Brian from GolfWRX joining us. Four out of five of us were in that bunker. I topped an iron out of the waste bunker, hit a decent wedge onto the green, and two-putted for bogey. +6.

 

**No. 10: 634-yard par 5**

Here’s where the fun begins. I hit my driver left of the fairway into the junk and punched it around until I got to the green with my fourth shot. Two putts, and in for bogey. I wish I could have played this hole again—it was playing downwind, so it was very "getable"—but I was in trouble from the first swing and scrambled to make bogey. +7.

 

**No. 11: 182-yard par 3**

Terrible swing with a 6-iron left me in the pines, hole-high to the right of the green. I had no idea how the ball would come out. Made good contact, but airmail the green into the bunker on the other side. Hit an amazing shot out of the bunker from a downhill lie to an elevated green, to about 10 feet, but two-putted for double. +9.

 

**No. 12: 544-yard par 5**

Hit a great drive, leaving about 260 yards to the green. Pulled out the 3-wood and got a high-face shot that went nowhere. Luckily, the fairway was wide open, leaving me with about a 75-yard shot into the green. Hit a really good "Zipper Magoo™" 60° wedge to 3 feet and tapped in for birdie. I'm back! +8.

 

**No. 13: 508-yard par 4**

This hole was a beast, playing directly into the wind. I hit a good drive into the middle of the fairway, still had about 240 yards to the green. Tried a 3-hybrid, left it right of the green, and hit a poor chip shot onto a very undulated green. Two-putted for bogey. +9.

 

**No. 14: 264-yard par 3**

Everything about this hole says to miss front-right of the green. The pin was back left, so naturally, I duck-hooked the 3-wood and short-sided myself in the pine straw. Chipped long and faced an impossible putt on a sidehill, downhill pin. Three-putted for double. Everyone agreed that the pin location was probably the worst possible spot and maybe even illegal. +11.

 

**No. 15: 385-yard par 4**

Water all along the right of the fairway with a single tree as the target line. Hit a decent drive on the left side of the fairway. The greens were super firm, so I tried a gap wedge to bounce it up, but it caught the fringe and spun back about 4 feet off the green. Faced a downhill putt and ended up three-putting. Now +13.

 

**No. 16: 477-yard par 5**

Blow my driver right off the planet. My caddie found it, but I had to take an unplayable lie, hitting three from just off the fairway. Pureed a 4-iron that landed on the front of the green and rolled 40 feet off the back. Chipped on and two-putted for another double. Now +15.

 

**No. 17: 175-yard par 3**

Great-looking hole. Hit a good 7-iron to the front pin location, just short of the green. Chipped up and made the putt for par. The beating was over, finally made a par. +15.

 

**No. 18: 433-yard par 4**

Hit a really good drive, leaving about 150 yards to the green. Matt and I joked because he initially thought my ball was his, but he was 15 yards left and 10 yards back. He asked if we wanted to switch tee shots, but I declined. He then hit a beautiful shot, lipping out for a miracle eagle (all caught on film, by the way). I offered to trade shots now, but Mr. Big Time didn’t want to anymore. I hit a good iron shot to about 10 feet and two-putted to finish with a par, carding an 85 (+15) on the day.

Thats exactly what they did.  I have low bounce wedges because I play in Arizona but didn't really quite need the 6* of bounce they offered stock.  So they bent some lofts strong to give me a bit more room to play with.
