Elementary Topic - Regripping

Apologies for my naivety ahead of time. 

 

I do my own regripping as I'm very particular (and there's nowhere within 35 minutes of me that can do it properly). 

 

I always do "plus one wrap of tape"

 

I've often wondered while regripping: Is there any disadvantage to removing the old grip, and if the old tape is intact: just applying the extra wrap on top of it?

 

I tried it tonight for the first time on one of the new irons I purchased, but really just curious to hear thoughts. 

 

Thanks in advance. I never enjoyed the process of removing old tape (even with a heat gun).

Only IF I can remove a grip completely clean and the tape stays intact completely, I would think about leaving the old tape where it is. Mostly if I do regripping the adhesive tape rips off the build tape below partly. And my adhesive tape mostly stays at the inside of the grip. 
but I am tinkering with masking tape only at the Moment, no adhesive tape at all. I can blow the grip on with air pressure and it will glide off the shaft easily.

When gripping with double sided tape, the only disadvantage is that it keeps adding an extra layer each time you regrip and the grip size keeps getting bigger and bigger.

 

If the first time you put on the grip - you put on two wraps.   Cut off the grip and there is still two layers of tape on the shaft.  Add a new layer of double sided for the new grip and you have 3 layers total.

 

If that extra layer doesn't cause any problems with the grip size for you, then there is no disadvantage.

 

If you blow on and off grips - then you can keep using the same tape for a while since you don't have to add any new layers of double sided tape.

I've found that if I buy closeout clubs at the end of season, it becomes quite possible to reuse grip tape by blowing off the grips.

But, with time, it either gets easy to pop off the grip or virtually impossible.

If you plan to blow off a grip I wouldn't wait a long time to do it.  Sometimes life happens and that may take a very long time.

 

I always test swing new clubs to see if I like or dislike the grips.

It's been mentioned many times but in case helpful it is very easy to take off old grip tape by heating it for a few seconds with a heat gun.
