Aberg's shot just landed on top of another's ball, shooting that ball way off the green. What's the ruling on that?

Not much to add, and I'm sure most have seen it by now. I'm curious what the ruling would be. Aberg was 200 yds out and landed directly on top of his playing partner's ball. His ball bounced off the green, but the partner's ball shot off the green and down the hill. Is there a penalty? Are balls allowed to be placed back before they hit (his partner's at least)?

Aberg's will be played from its final resting place.

 

Partner's ball will be replaced in its original position, or as close as can reasonably be achieved.

We have two players, two golf balls, so we have to look at two different rules.

 

See Rule 9.6 to understand what happens with the ball that was at rest, and subsequently moved by an Outside Influence, Aberg's ball.  The ball is replaced, no penalty.  If the original location isn't known, it is estimated.

 

See 11.1 to understand what happens with Aberg's, his ball in motion hit an Outside Influence (the other ball at rest).  There's no Penalty (with some exceptions that don't apply here) and 11.1b(1) says he plays it wherever it comes to rest.

And just to state what has been stated but in explicitly more forceful terms, Morikawa's ball (the ball at rest struck by Aberg's ball) must be replaced where it was originally. 

 

In this case, his ball was knocked far away from the hole, so of course he'd want to replace it. But I've had it happen where my ball is hit closer to the hole by someone else's ball, and there was a story here not long ago about a "hole in one" that had to be reversed when it was realized that the player's ball in the hole was knocked in there by a fellow competitor's ball. In both cases, that "fortunate luck" had to be reversed and the ball placed where it was originally.

I suppose "will be replaced" is equally strong, at least in my mind, as the outcome is the same.

Agh! It's always a heavy responsibility to be the first responder to a query in the rules forum. This question was originally posted to "General Golf" and such a simple ruling that I couldn't resist. Please forgive me! 🙂

Yes, both @jholz and @davep043 used language that, fairly interpreted, explained what must be done. However, as many know, this is the internet. People may have poor reading comprehension, or may read "what they want to read" in a situation. 

 

I felt that saying the same thing they said, but in another way that removes any possible nuance from the matter, might help some people who can't read good.

I'd make a sake joke about Morikawa as he's Chinese/Japanese, but he's born here and from NorCal... But I'm not going to say we should follow two rounds of beers with a bold Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Maybe some Russian River Pliny the Elder for the third round?

Akvavits can be rather spicy and not liked by everyone. This one is my favourite for a chilled schnapps with crayfish.
