Does Temporary Immovable Obstruction Give Relief To Intended Line Of Play?

Recommended Posts

I understand that we get some relief from temporary immovable obstructions, but do the Rules allow us more relief if an intended shot exceeds the straight-line window offered in the Rules?  Specifically, if one intends to hit a low cut or a high draw and needs more relief from that obstruction?

Nope never from intended shot shape and relief will depend on whether Model Rule F-23 is in play or not.

For more clarification on what relief is possible with or without the model rule see.

You've pretty much answered your own question.  You get the relief offered in the MLR, which is based on line of sight.

Good to know. So next time I play a PGAT event, I'll need to know that I can't move extra far from the grandstand to give me extra relief for my tendency to snap-hook the ball 😂

Also, your average person won’t ever play a TIO.

When my friends ask, “Do I get line of sight relief from that?” My answer always is, “Ask yourself, “Am I playing on TV? If the answer is no, then no relief.”

(None of these guys have ever played anything with a TIO. They are always asking about IO’s like buildings)

I know one course not far away from my home that has a large protective net by one of the greens. In some competitions that net is declared as a TIO. And do not forget temporary starter tents, they tend to be TIOs (at least around here) and they exist in most competitions, especially in bad weather. Not often in play but nevertheless, they are TIOs.

Perhaps  it would be helpful to this club to point them to MLR-E6.

I did once, on the third day of an amateiur event,  come upon a tent being erected behind the 9th green.  It turned out that the day after the tournament was the host club's Captain's Day and this was the halfway house. beer tent being put up .  Sadly, it wasn't being stocked in advance and remained a dry TIO for the rest of our time there.

Have not visited that course for a number of years so it may be that this would the procedure nowadays as it is far easier for the players to understand and invoke the LR. E-6 type of LR was the other LR used some 15 years ago.

In my area, its not uncommon for courses to install air circulation fans near greens.  The state golf association (Virginia State GA) defines these as TIO's for its championships and qualifiers.

Yeah… One of the courses nearby me will set up a large tent near the 18th. It's rarely in play, but you can hit your ball over that way, and it's treated as a TIO.

So, as someone recently said, never say never to an occurrence on a golf course 😉

Oddly enough, the local section of the PGA doesn't have that on their hard card, I can't remember seeing it on the event-specific local rule sheet.
