Least enjoyable masters???

Forged in Japan

I enjoyed watching the tournament this year. I enjoyed seeing Immelman drain quite a few clutch putts and hit some pretty tight iron shots throughout the round. Each time his nerves crept in, I started getting a sick feeling and worried that the round would turn into another infamous 4th round meltdown ala Carnoustie/Winged Foot/96 Masters. I was thrilled to see him recover from each poor shot and pull off his first major.

Trevor pretty much outplayed everyone according to the stats quoted earlier in this thread and elsewhere, and he built up a lead big enough to allow for wiggle room coming down the stretch.

I agree that it seems as though the pendulum needs to swing back towards the "old Augusta" as far as course-setup goes, but the weather the last two years seems to have been atypical. Had the winds not been gusting, I wonder what the scores would have been like on Sunday??

Sure it could have been even more exciting if a couple of guys had posted some lower scores early on, but overall I loved this Masters.

Again, I think some of you are blaming the course and the course setup for the lack of excitement on Sunday. Sunday's winds were gusting to 25+ mph, which is going to have an effect on scoring at any course. In addition the conditions got worse as it got later in the day. Had we seen weather conditions like we had on Saturday (or thursday or friday for that matter), we might have seen a lot more eagles and Birdies on the back nine.

Don't blame the course for the impact of the weather.

I thought Saturday was phenomenal. I really enjoyed watching.

Yesterday was a dud. It seems to me it was more the wind than the course changes. I think with good weather the risk/reward everyone wants would be there. The Masters needed more emphasis on shot-making. Still not sure if they went too far. The weather the last two years has been so poor.

Thank you for this useful post. I was waiting for someone to point out that the weather was why it was such a challenge - Augusta's just a totally different place when there's a stiff breeze like yesterday.

And I thought Sunday had plenty of exciting moments. Snedeker's eagle on 2 and the long birdie on 12 and then dumping it in the water on 13. Immelman's unbelievable up and down on 11 and then wondering whether he could keep it together with the double on 16. Waiting for the Tiger run that never came. But with 8 out of the top 10 in the world out of contention and playing relatively poorly, I can see how the leaderboard would make folks unhappy.

And if you make the course easier but leave the greens the same, then it becomes a putting contest. This week, Immelman drove the ball very straight and sort of long, and only took 112 putts. He played the best and rightfully won, it just so happened that thanks to the weather his worst 9 was his last 9.

My sentiments exactly- thought it was a wonderful Masters. I was beginning to think I was the only one who was tired of seeing nothing but driver- eight iron at every tour stop. I want to see these guys use every club in the bag and that's precisely what happened on Sunday. How often do you see Tiger hitting three wood into a par five(like #15?)? Never... These guys had to make some decisions when it came to playing certain holes and I thought that was fantastic. As far as bringing back Augusta National of ten years ago? As the above poster said, might as well make it a 72 hole putting contest...

Hi,

I must admit the Masters was a little tedious this year and I felt the same as the 07. I enjoyed it best when the players could go for the pin and get rewarded and obviously get punished for bad one. I felt this was one of the majors where shot makers could shine and I loved watching this. Now with the lengthening of the course etc most players were in survival mode and to me I don't want to see that at the Masters. Normally I watch the entire final round but this year I only watched about 45 mins of it as I lost interest when 'par golf' was being played.

For me par golf is what the US Open and British Open is all about. Diffrent course management is needed and as a spectator I expect this type of play. I absolutely love watching the best struggle in these 2 majors and seeing how they cope. I just don't like seeing this type of golf played at Augusta.

i'll echo what others have said. it was very sterile and lack a certain something. Congrats to Immelman, but the course setup now is rather boring.

This year's Masters sucked. Boring! Immelman's pre-shot routine is exactly why only die-hard golfers watch golf. Snedeker was refreshing at least. Phil fell apart, Cink always gasses, Casey is a d*ck, Flesch is a trainwreck (would have been fun to watch him be more in contention and then crumble),.

Ouch. It played like a US Open today, very tough. And why would you wish bad on someone? That's a little ignorant I think. :D

It's not wishing bad, failure is drama and makes for entertaining TV. Years from now nobody will remember Paul Lawrie or Todd Hamilton but Jean Van de Velde, Ed Sneed, Scott Hoch and Doug Sanders will live forever. :good:
