Flaming/Discoloring a Shaft

Anyone have experience/pictures?

I've been looking through this forum and seeing a ton of threads on flaming/blueing or doing a number of things to clubheads. I've seen many pictures of so many different finishes on clubheads and custom paint filling that it is making me very antsy.

So, I started thinking: has anyone done anything to their shafts? I was thinking about maybe trying to flame a shaft and see what happens? Anything I should know before trying this?

i doubt anyone has tried. it probobly ruins the shafts, especially graphite

I did a putter shaft and it looked pretty cool with all the golds/purples/blues. Looks really cool on a dark clubhead. Don't think I have any pics of it anymore.

I know people do it to heads all the time but heating metal till it changes colors changes , or more likely removes , the tempering of the metal if not cooled properly and in a specific manner.

 

I'm not familiar what the metallurgy of the common golf metals are but it seems to me like this is a bad thing to do a shaft or club head unless your trying to weaken it. Maybe in the case of a wedge they are for softness ?

 

I wouldn't tho.

friend of mine took a propane torch to a pulled putter shaft and it looked pretty cool....somewhat similar to "flaming" a stainless steel putter head but the chrome finish produces a more "oily" look with blues, purples, yellows, etc. like oil on water.

Not a good idea, as mentioned by someone above, you're d*cking with the tempering, flex and strength will go out the window. May be ok on a putter, don't try it on anything else!

Here's a couple of pics of one. As others have stated, don't try this with Iron Shafts. I only do it on Putter Shafts.

that's pretty cool looking. is there anyone that can give official confirmation that this would damage shafts for irons and affect their performance? or is this just speculation. I'm not being critical, I just have no clue and I'm curious.

Chris, that is a cool color. I have a copper Byron with a flamed shaft, and the color is nothing like that. Thanks for the pictures.

I've done it to a DGX-100 4 Iron Shaft, and the shaft buckled the first time I tried to use it. It really messes up the integrity of the shaft when used at normal swing speeds.

No speculation. If you see steel shafts with brown or blued tips, they were overheated and will usually result in bent tips if reused.

 

As was stated above, DO NOT TORCH IRON SHAFTS. You really shouldn't do it to putter shafts either, as they are designed to flex as well. However, your chances of failure are less due to the lower velocity of the putterhead.
