Marking your ball

what do you use ?
Hi All ...

Typically I only mark a few small dots on my ball for identification however recently I wanted to try marking a line to help with alignment ... so got myself a gadget to align the line and drew out a bunch of balls with one line each with the standard Sharpie mini ... all good, however ... I noticed after the round, especially on the driver but on all clubs those darn lines had 'rubbed' off on the club faces (marked up the club faces with the Blue Sharpie lines I'd drawn on the ball).

The lines have cleaned off but I wanted to ask u all, is this normal ? Do you guy's use a marker that doesn't mark up the face ... or should I just get use to cleaning the alignment lines off the club faces regularly ?

Generally, I use a tree somewhere along the right side of the first fairway to mark my ball. Its always a distinguishing brown odd shaped mark. Seriously, I use a red sharpie to make a small line on either side of the ball name and, at times, I'll find a small red mark on my driver face. I think its best to mark the balls way in advance of the round--the fresher sharpie marks (those made one day before) are the ones that tend to leave a discoloration on the clubs.

lol maybe I should stick to my tree marks too ;)

I did mark 'em up the night b4 assuming as per your suggestion they'd 'soak' in better ... *shrugs*

I wonder if the ball actually made a difference ... they were TP Red's .... hmmm

David, I use the TP Red as well. I use a Red sharpie to and draw a small red line over the alignment arrow. On the tee, I just make sure I tee it with the line on the bottom of the ball/sitting on the tee. I may get an occassional mark on an iron face, but I clean my iron after every shot anyway, so it usually wipes off.

Green sharpie in a shamrock template. Australian/Irish heritage.

Use an Aussie 50c piece to mark my ball on green.

Red Sharpie. I fill in 5 dimples in a pentagon shape around the logo on each side of the ball (10 dots total). It makes my ball distinguishable from the hundreds of other balls out there with red dots on them.

It cracks me up when people draw murals on their balls to id them. It's just a golf ball, not some prized posession! it's going to go away sooner or later so dont get too attached!

I don't mark it to avoid losing it, I do it so I can positively identify it as mine in competition play. I don't care about losing the ball... I DO care about the 2 stroke penalty for playing a wrong ball, or the stroke and distance penalty for a lost ball if I can't identify it as mine.

For me, its a blue sharpie dot below and right of the number and a dot next to the model number.

Anyone know about those golfball monogramers - I got one from a family member who thought it was a great gift (clearly not a golf fan). But I figured as long as I have it, might as well try it. It is legal to use, seeing as it requires you to press into the cover and then coat it with some glueish stuff.

I had one.... used it once.... pure junk. You're right though, no real golfer would ever give one of those to another golfer.

I play a ProV1x which is pretty common - in fact it would not be unheard of to find that 3/4 golfers in my group are playing that ball. Even if I am careful there is no way to avoid the problem of another golfer playing your ball in error.

So I mark my ball with either the Greek letter Psi or a lower case 'h' with a bar through the verticle part. I can be relatively sure that no one else will mark their ball that way - I thought.

Was playing a couple of weeks ago and a guy was playing a ProV1x and he marked his ball with a fancy script "R". Sure enough he played my ball in the 3rd hole - sometimes you just can't win.

ps. There is a reason for the choice of markers. The Heisenburg Uncertainty Principle states that it is impossible to know (simultaneously) the exact momentum and position of a quantum particle. The ROG require that the ball not be moving when it is struck, so you then know its exact momentum (0). Therefore there is no way that you can know where the ball is when it is properly struck - so bad shots ARE NOT my fault (Psi and h-bar are fundamental symbols in quantum mechanics).
