Drinking and Golf

Does anybody else just love to get buzzed while playing? I usually hit beer pretty heavy during the round but I've been known to pack some Crown & Diet or on occasion a homemade Sangria (Merlot and Lemonade in a pinch).

What is your favorite on-course libation? Do you play better or worse, or at what point do you hit the wall?

I usually am tanked by the end of the round. I think I'm playing better, but that's just because I usually can't count past three after imbibing.

Personally, I like to enjoy a libation or two for the golf gods when playing with my chums. Of course, if there're a little bit of a wager on the line - say, in the amount of a sixpence per hole - then I certainly practice moderation. On the other hand, if the lads and I are just enjoying a good walk spoiled, then my drink of choice is a snifter of brandy, or perhaps a syringe of Jack Daniels directly into a vein. And when I get into my cups, oh, look out chaps.

Look out texas-ex...you may be about to be crucified. There's a few guys on here that take things a little seriously, and the last time this topic was discussed I remember it getting pretty ugly.

Be prepared for the "how dare you" bunch to come out it in full-force!!!

As for my response to your question: I'm not a drinker, on the course or off. But I've known a few guys, one in particular, that seem to turn the game up a notch when they get a little tipsy. I can't figure it out, but when this one fella starts drinking I lower the bets!!

I like to drink (I even keep a flask of Whisky in my golf bag!) but I rarely have more than a beer or 2 when golfing. I don't find that it helps my game.

If I am in a scramble or playing with a group that is drinking a lot I may step it up a little, depending on how well I am playing.

To each his own though.

I drink one or twice a month off the course but I rarely if ever will have a beer while on the course.

Even though I'm only a 14 cap I take golf very seriously and I work VERY hard to get better. I play worse when I'm drinking and it just ends up pissing me off and leaves me wondering why I would do something on the course that won't help me shoot the best score possible so for that reason I don't drink and play.

For the record, I have lots of friends who do drink and play and as long as it doesn't effect your ability to adhere to good golf etiquette then I have no problem with it what-so-ever.

One of the best postings ever.

I love to have a few beers on the course with your buddies etc. I find it relaxing. If I am playing in a match or something like that then water or gatorade it is.

Other then that the beers are flying......... and when I get home my wife is waiting for me at the door you guys know what I mean. Lol......

I have found that it can be a sort of "tightrope act" with regards to the amount of libation to imbibe on the golf course. Not enough cocktails and a person's nerves may be a bit jangly. Too many cocktails and a person has a way of getting sloppy and sloppy is no way to play golf. In an analysis, I would rather deal with my nerves as opposed to being hammered while on the golf course.

I actually had a guy that caddied for me at the same tournament every year and his "job" (as defined by him) was to administer the Budweisers to me in an orderly fashion that would neither allow me to become smashed or to fully sober up..........walking the tightrope!

I always played very well at that particular tournament! :drinks:

Like my fellow Texan, I love getting buzzed on the golf course. Most of us play muni's anyway, so what's the big deal? My choice is Miller Lite.

My group of friends get together every year, stay and play golf at a resort. We have like 5 foursomes. We all put money into a pot and have a stupid trophy presentation at the end. We drink pretty heavily, some more than others. We have great respect for cart rules and respect the course in general. Drinking on the course is very appropriate, in this situation, others not so much, but in this situation, the golf course is a bar, and we are playing a live version of GOLDEN TEE. Hell, sometimes we even have nice looking cart girls.

They say the reason most courses are eighteen holes is because thats how many shots the Scotts figured was in a bottle of whiskey.

As for me I drink a half gallon or better of bourbon every week of my life and never drink on the golf course and never have I dont even drink in the club house after I do not drink and drive period.

I know plenty of guys that think it helps there games (idiots in my opinion) but to each his own.

I don't drink much, but I love to have me some scotch on a cold day, or gatorade/vodka on a hot one. In fact, on the course is about the only place I drink. Come to think of it, I only smoke on the golf course too. The nicotine amps me up a bit, but I have the alcohol to calm me back down. Add a bit of coffee for balance and I'd say I'm pretty even keel when golfing.

Weird how such a noble game brings out the vices. Oh yeah, I think I wouldn't need to drink at all if they would just roll the golf ball back to a 1990 balata.

I like to have a few beers while playing.

During last years Men's Club Championship though, my buddy and I were betting each other drinks on almost every hole about who could get it closer, up and down from the traps, etc. We were pretty much hammered after 18. Ended up shooting the best round of my life out at Apple Tree golf course (65 with 10 birdies). Was it the beer and rum we drank? I'm sure it had something to do with it loosening us up a little and relaxing the tension most people feel in a club championship tournament.

...I do not drink and drive period...
Oops.....and that's the rub, isn't it?

Unless you live on the course or are riding with someone else, you have to drive home. Some states can even consider your impaired after just a few, I think(?)

DWI/DUI aren't nearly as fun as they used to be. Even jail has lost it's allure these days --- really smells bad in there. And prison.......I hear golfers don't do well in prison.

Dealing with attorneys & their fees, the courts, suspended license, cancelled insurance --- hope they don't find out about it at work.

And you have to consider the off chance that you may end up being responsible for some family hanging an empty stocking on the mantle each Christmas.

So it's definitely best to plan ahead to get a lift home after a day of fun & more-than-a-few beers on the golf course. ;)
