Guys, moderation is preferred, if you are staying at said resort, I don't find it a big issue. Please, settle down, those who claim to wear halos and are against it. DWI's are not fun and I have been around people who have had them, and no I don't condone driving drunk, but if some people like to drink it up, hey it's their 40-50 dollars, if they'd rather get smashed, let them, plus they are risking their livelihood.

This post's intention was merely a question, and certainly doesn't need to be a second coming of prohibition. If you don't chose to be a part of this thread, we don't need to hear you justify as to why you don't drink, hate drinking, or have no use for it. We realize that you may have had heartaches, at the expense of irresponsible morons, but again this post was intended to ask who drinks and what they drink. Relax and take a few deep breaths. I drink on the course and enjoy myself. For every 4 rounds during the month, I drink like 2. The other 2 I'm either with my father-in-law who doesn't drink or with my another foursome who play for money.

Tough to stuff the toothpaste back into the tube, isn't it? Some writers need to heed the counsel of that noted philosopher Iggy Pop who said - "Nihilism is best done by professionals."

The problem you and others have encountered within this thread is that, at least in my humble opinion, juvenile and/or dysfunctional behavior such as those described in this thread engender some pretty strong snap-back. Invoking some dime-store version of libertarianism doesn't hold much water, does it? It flies into a pretty strong headwind of collective experience. It can't be dismissed with a wave of the hand. The truth, bitter as it is, is that society will not allow hedonism to be divorced from its consequences. Public drunkenness carries too much baggage. It isn't fun; it's tragic. It isn't a liberty; it's license. That license has been revoked.

It sounds like somebody could use a drink.

Maybe, someone has "used" enough to know what negative externalities (and internalities for that matter) alcohol can engender. I'll compare my drunkalogue with yours anytime you wish.

Experience brings many life lessons. Some of those lessons come at a high price. If you are the one paying the price ok. We are all adults we understand the consequences of our actions, but let’s just hope that others don’t pay the price for your experiences. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I am not saying you should never have a drink, I am saying do it responsibly. I know this was intended to be a light hearted topic, but too many people have been touched by alcohol in a negative or tragic way. Keep in mind this type of topic provokes emotion good bad or indifferent you are going to have some strong feelings on the topic

Maybe this entire discussion will be the first of many steps for someone among us in coming to terms with a cunning, baffling, and powerful disease. Whoever your are, if alcohol has become a problem in your life, whether on the golf course or elsewhere, there is help available. May you find it, now. I pray you do.

It's just a shame that some people can't get over themselves for a little bit and let an innocent thread get a few laughs. Nobody's perfect and your negative experiences are understood. I've had friends die in car accidents from alcohol related incidents (my brother was one of them), and my uncle died early from complications due to alcohol. You don't see me preaching to you, so please, quit preaching to us. This isn't church and we aren't in front of Billy Graham, this is a golf forum, in a category called the 19th Hole, and if I recall correctly, the 19th Hole refers to the watering hole, after the 18th, my fellow partner and Big 12 South foe, Texas-Ex, was merely posting a question.

There is a similiar post about cigars, why don't some of you who view your body as the prevebial "temple", raise cain over there and point out that smoking cigars causes lung cancer.

I am ashamed that alcohol is even sold in this land. It should be outlawed with guns and tobacco just like drugs are. Nothing good comes of it. :black eye:

Aww, come on. Who doesn't enjoy a bourbon neat with a side of HK USP .45? :anti-american:

[long legged mack daddy] Thank you for your vote! [/obama]

Reminds me of a time at Brock Park in Houston.

Playing with a HPD Officer friend of mine, we were having a beer and cruzing down the fairway, when several gang dudes jumped out of the trees and started toward us.

My friend pulled his off duty piece out of the bag, showed it to the guys and asked, Have yall seen my tee shot ?

They dove back into the woods like the vermon they were.

Very cool, See firearms, golf and beer do go together :friends:

My uncle had a buddy get robbed at Brock. Same thing, a couple of guys came out of the hood, held them at gunpoint, and took their wallets and golf bags.

Drinking alcohol lowers inhibition. It's pretty excellent. For those of us who hate ourselves, it presents a cheap, easy way to practice escapism and experience happiness for a short period of time.
Such insight & Shakespearean wisdom there: your statement is both tragic and hilarious at the same time.

I usually play by myself, and am trying to improve my game, so I'm not much of a drinker on the course. When I get together with some buddies for a fun round, I'll have maybe 2 or 3 per 9 at most, usually 1 or 2. Keep in mind, we play crowded muni's around here, so it is anywhere from 4.5 - 5.5 hours per round, and being 6'2" 285lbs, a 6 pack in 5 hours isnt exactly a buzz for me, and I always drink a bottle of water between beers. I do find that even after 1 or 2 beers, my game suffers, so I dont do it often. When I was young and stupid, I would get tanked on the course, and admittedly, I would drive home afterwards. Thankfully, I never had an accident injuring myself, or more importantly anyone else. Since growing up a bit, I no longer drive in impaired conditions, because the consequences are not worth it. When we go to the casino course (Kosatti pines at Coushatta), we start the morning right with bloody mary's (usually 3 or 4 before the round, and 6 or 7 during), but we are catching a ride back to the hotel and sleeping it off. When I do have a few beers, if shiner is available, I'll enjoy a few of them. If it is not available, miller lite will suffice. On occasion, a good stiff crown and water hits the spot.

Having drank enough to kill an average person on so many occasions, getting sick, and hating life the next morning, I no longer enjoy the feeling of being drunk. I still enjoy quality beer and bourbon, but I do so in moderation now. I would guess that getting drunk only happens once or twice per year now, and it is usually at my home (we throw the parties in our group). Though I have a feeling that next weekend in Vegas, I will be getting schnockerd on the course, and enjoying every minute of it.

I said my peace, I am not preaching to you or anyone else. I am requesting that people drink resposibly. When I see people ranting about how drunk they get on the golf course it raises concern and I voice my concern. I enjoy a good time as much as the next guy, but I don't act like a frat kid at his first college party to do it.

It's really difficult to diagnose someone as an alcoholic. Recovering alcoholics call this "taking someone else's inventory". This is not helpful to either party and should not be done. With that said, the statistics on the number of alcoholics in the US is frightening. I have always said that if you are sitting in a sporting event or at a movie, look to your right one seat and then look to your left one seat. One of seats, including your own will have an occupant whose life will be adversely effected by alcoholism. If you look 5 seats to your right and 5 seats to your left, one of the 11 seats, including your own, will contain an alcoholic. Frightening numbers, aren't they.

How do you know if you are an alcoholic. One short answer it to answer the question - "have I ever asked myself, do I drink too much?" If you have, you probably are. A more detailed way to know where you stand is to take the following self-test distributed by the U. S. Council on Alcoholism:

Self Test for Alcoholism

By the U.S. National Council on Alcoholism

The first--and often the toughest--step in beating alcoholism is admitting the existence of a problem.

To test whether alcohol is a problem for you, answer "YES" or "NO" to this series of questions.

1.Do you occasionally drink heavily after a disappointment, quarrel or rough day?

YES NO

2.When under pressure, do you always drink more heavily than usual?

YES NO

3.Can you handle more liquor now than when you first started drinking?

YES NO

4.On the "morning after," have you been unable to remember part of the evening before--even though friends say you didn't pass out?

YES NO

5.When drinking with others, do you try to have a few extra drinks when they won't know it?

YES NO

6.Are there certain occasions when you feel uncomfortable if alcohol is not available?

YES NO

7.When you start drinking, are you in more of a hurry to get the first drink than you used to be?

YES NO

8.Do you sometimes feel a little guilty about your drinking?

YES NO

9.Are you secretly irritated when friends or family discuss your drinking?

YES NO

10.Have you experienced memory blackouts more frequently?

YES NO

11.Do you often want to drink more after friends have had enough?

YES NO

12.Do you usually have a reason for occasions when you drink heavily?

YES NO

13.When sober, do you often regret things you've done or said while drinking?

YES NO

14.Have you tried to control your drinking by switching Brands or following different plans?

YES NO

15.Have you often failed to keep promises about controlling your drinking?

YES NO

16.Have you tried to control your drinking by changing jobs or moving?

YES NO

17.Do you try to avoid family or friends while drinking?

YES NO

18.Are you having an increasing number of financial and work problems?

YES NO

19.Do more people seem to be treating you unfairly without reason?

YES NO

20.Do you eat very little or irregularly when drinking?

YES NO

21.Do you sometimes have the morning "shakes" and relieve them with a drink?

YES NO

22.Are you unable to drink as much as you once did?

YES NO

23.Do you sometimes stay drunk for several days at a time?

YES NO

24.Do you sometimes feel very depressed and wonder whether life is worth living?

YES NO

25.After drinking, do you ever see or hear things that aren't there?

YES NO

26.Do you get terribly frightened after drinking heavily?

YES NO

Did you answer "YES" to any of these questions?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you have some symptoms that may indicate alcoholism.

"Yes" answers to three or more questions in various categories indicate the following stages of alcoholism:

Questions 1 to 8: Early stage.

Questions 9 to 21: Middle stage.

Questions 22 to 26: Beginning of Final stage.

If this discussion makes anyone stop and think about their drinking seriously, it will have been well worth the effort. Let's pray that it does.

I see nothing wrong with having a few drinks on the course, but I find that each round requires a different approach. For instance, our annual company best-ball is a notorious boozefest, whereas a round with some friends will likely only involve a beer or two.

Also, the method by which I am transporting myself around the course plays a part. I almost never drink while walking, because beer doesn't quite work as well as gatorade or water when you're working up a sweat. If I'm carting, then I'll be more tempted to have a drink or two (within the reasonable limits while operating a motor vehicle).
