I read a post the other day on the Cameron Collector website on how to refinish your old PING ANSER. I took some wrong turns and my putter looks like the statue of Liberty. My advice to y'all is not to mess with anything that is as obscure as this is....friggin' ridiculous. PING purest forgive me. :drinks: :crazy: ;)

Okay...what did you do so no other guy gets screwed up? I know the easiest method is to just soak it in coke....hard to screw that up. I hope it wasn't vinegar.

Has anyone every tried sandblasting a putter before refinishing it?

 

I'm half tempted to do it on a junker I have laying around the basement.

I got a chemical used to get rid of rust and applied it, then I got some brasso and added to it with a paint brush and now it's green like the statue of liberty. I guess that means the head was made of copper??? I'm sick about it. I guess my next move will be soak it in coke and if that doesn't do it...BLUE IT!!!

Ouch.....you can always try Flitz....that should get off most of the stains and discoloration without doing anything terribly caustic to the metal. It'll probably end up looking shiny and new but with a little time you should get the patina back to normal.

I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE TO SCREW UP A PERFECTLY GOOD PUTTING INSTRUMENT............and THEN ask for some advice on what to do? You and I must be soul mates! I have a Wilson 8802 on the bench that went under the "stripping wheel" a couple of weeks ago. Meant to get it down to raw and blue it, but it just turned out that I BLEW it.

I would like to see a picture of the AYD with that finish after the vinegar bath. Got two old Bronze Ansers, one that has had a coke bath and looks antiqued, and the other 85020 with aged patina finish. Would love to turn one into an oil can look.

Try soaking a penny or a quarter in a vinegar overnight to get a general idea. You'll be amazed at how caustic the stuff is. It's a lot cheaper then sticking your pride and joy Ping in there for a result you may not like.

I tried the distilled white vinegar/salt soak first and it was definitely less dull looking but no shine.

Vinegar is acetic acid, not caustic. It will remove any oxidation. Oxidation on copper/bronze makes the metal dark and dull. Removing will make it bright, but not shiney unless you polish it. I would guess that your putter now looks light but not shiney. To get back to a dark finish, you need to re-oxidize the bronze. You can do this in air (oxygen) over time (slow) or with an oxdizing agent.

 

You might want to try putting it in hydrogen peroxide (available in any drug or grocery store) to oxidize the surface. This should darken it back up.

It's funny now, but not so funny during the whole fiasco. Friggin' nightmare. Oh well it's not like it's one of those $1000 Anser putters. I'm screwing with it. It's not like I'm ever gonna use it. Nostalgic purposes only.

Far from it, I don't care it's a stupid crappy putter with dings all over it. It's nasty. I just bought a putter on ebay pretty nice price too. I have been doing lots of cool stuff to the ANSER. Yesterday I soaked it in Hydrogen Peroxide. Today I'm gonna blue it. CHEERS!!!

using this exact post i went out and bought those dremel bits and used them on my anser and was amazed. it looks exactly like the ones above. thanks.

Why do people want shiny Ansers? I putted with an 85029 Anser for 23 years (someone gave me a Newport, I reluctantly tried it and I really like the heavier head), and I never understood why you would make an old Ping look like a piece of chrome. Shiny is fine on a Harley, but it is not good on an Anser.

If you want it to look original, you have to pull the head and tumble it. Pulling the shaft from Pings is a big enough pain with the ball bearing and interference fit.

 

The worst thing you can do is put any polishing/buffing agent on an old Ping, whether it's a putter or iron. Either will remove the tumbled finsh and the tumble was what they used to cut glare on otherwise shiny copper and stainless steel.

 

If oxidation is all you want to remove, Tarn-X is as good as anything. Vinegar or Coke will work as well. The key is nothing abrasive.

 

Most Ping collectors are paying the money for that "patina." Unless it turns green, let it age.
