Need some opinions on the best hybrid utility club

Mizunofan

Recommended Posts

I currently have a 17deg. MIZUNO FLI-HI CLK with a DynamicGold Sensicore steel shaft.

I now want to switch to a Fujikura Tour Platform 26.3 shaft, but was told by Mizuno that I cannot change a steel shaft to a graphite one.

So my choices are to either buy another MIZUNO with a graphite shaft or buy a whole new club.

Please post some opinions as to what you think is the most workable, best-feeling utility hybrid club. Thank you.

I am not a club ho and don't change clubs often. I haven't tried many hybrids but after hitting my brother's Sonartec MD19 I bought myself one with an I-rod X shaft. It's supposed to replace the 2i/5w but to be honest I hit it almost as far as my driver and definately further than my 3w. It's a pure cannon I reckon I am hitting it about 270, no s##t!

It's long, forgiving, awesome ball flight and so workable you wouldn't believe.

Don't buy anyhting else until you have at least hit this club.

I would reshaft it. All you need to do is add some lead tape to get the swing weight to were you want it becasue steel shafted heads from the OEM's come lighter than graphite shafted heads. Reason being, when you put a light shaft into a light head your swing weight will be very light.

The Mizuno is a very hot club - I don't think the 27.3 will fit unless you shim or something. It's a .370 tip.

Did you like the heavy, yet solid feel of the CLK?

Or do you want something that feels lighter, crisper?

the rescuse dual TP is a very soild club, one of my favs, but i recently went to a demo day and tried the A2 hybrid from adams, and think i might switch to that. it was very easy to hit and gave me a nice high ball flight but not too high. plus it seemed to be one of the only hybrids i wasn't hooking.

I've never been a fan of hybrids below 20*, that's why I still carry a 5 wood. But as far as a hybrid to replace my 3 iron, my 3 favorites are:

1. Bridgestone J33 hybrid - great looks, easy to hit, solid quality, mid to high trajectory perfect for what I need it for which is a 3 iron replacement, and NV 85 shaft for around $100

2. Sonartec MD - versatile, low piercing long iron type trajectory, best solid feel, not my favorite head design, not cheap but deals can be found on Ebay.

3. Cobra Baffler - great solid feel, stupid easy to hit, high ball flight like a fairway wood, long and accurate because of a slightly longer shaft, around $100 on Ebay.

I know this does not really answer your question since you are looking for a 17* but hope it helps anyway, these 3 are very solid clubs.

The MD is LONG. I've hit it out of some tall rough easily with the ball sitting down with great results. I like the feel of the Cobra Baffler better but the MD has great results.

I do not want to thread jack, but I have been hearing so many players saying that the MD is long. Do you think that the MD 17* would be to much club to replace a 5 wood?

Why do you want to change shafts? Distance is not why we use hybrids, consistency is. 17* is 4 wood loft, so if you need distance get one of them.

Like the poster above, I like my hybrids with steel shafts that progress naturally in weight and length from my irons.

There are tip weights that you can put in the tip of the graphite shaft before it is installed that will get the weight just where you want it. Mike

Thank you for everyone's postings and pics! This forum is the best!

I read on Golf Digest's 2006 Hot List about the NIKE Slingshot Tour hybrid. Has anyone here tried this club? As always, feedback would be appreciated.

I saw it on NIKE's website, looks pretty nice. Has a "constant weight" Mitsubishi Diamana Tour shaft: 18degree head/40"/76g weight.
