What exactly does "wedge flex" mean?

I always hear wedges claiming they're "wedge flex"....... what does that mean? I'd like to put KBS wedge shafts into my Epon wedges but they don't list any of the characteristics on their website. Are they high kickpoint, low kickpoint?, stiff tip, soft, etc, etc?

And if you play 130g 3-pw shafts, should you match that weight in your wedges?

"wedge flex" is a nebulous term, but can be generally interpreted as "not quite stiff", or "firm" (i.e., in between a DG R300 and S300). yeah, if you play 130g shafts in your regular irons, you want to play them in your wedges too. you generally don't want your wedges to feel lighter than the rest of your irons.

Correction, Titleist's wedge flex is S200, that is not a general rule of thumb. The Vokey's are heavy so they use a lighter shaft.

The VR wedges wedge flex is S400.

 

I think they are scrap shafts that are left over, they cut them down and call them "wedge" flexs.

Depending on the company... some believe in softer shafts for wedges since most shots aren't full swings and that a softer shaft(tip) relates to softer(more?) feel. Others don't buy into that theory and believe wedge flex is irrelevant and/or a stiff flex(tip) creates more spin

 

 

As an example, I've had Callaway wedges that were probably R300's whereas Cleveland

and Vokey are Stiff 200 or 300's

In the past, Vokeys with lofts stronger than 54° (i.e. 48, 50, 52) were typically S300 and 54° and weaker were S200. Mizuno tends to use S200 in all their wedges.

 

For the most part, virtually all "wedge flex" shafts are S200, 300 or 400 depending on the manufacturer and/or loft but you'll often find the butt markings on many "wedge flex" shafts do not indicate any specific flex but rather DGISL-T or the like with the "T" indicating a wedge specific blank.

Varies by company. Nike used the S400. Others use either the S200 or S300.

Personally I know for a fact Wedge Flex on Callaway MD2's = DGS300 Same goes for the old 588 Forged Clevelands.

 

The only way to truly find out is to cut the grip off and read the data on the top of the shaft.

Kbs has wedge shafts with different profiles. The most common wedge flex is just a S200.

Funny, because I asked Cleveland the same question and was told S400. I don't think they really even know for sure.

 

Off topic, but I was talking to a Callaway rep on the phone today about putters. He tried to tell me that they make the V-line in the new O works putters. I was on the website at the time of the call and I told him, uh no you do not. You have the R-line and V-line fang. He said oh yeah, you're right.
