I like the idea, but again, the cost is something to think about. I was in the same situation as you, only I'm a junior and I didn't want to spend so much on a green. I wanted somewhere to practice whenever as I'm not the greatest putter in the world. So, yes, I made my own. Sorry for the tilted pic!

I bought the mat, which is 17 feet by 12 feet for $135. I dug out an area that size from the backyard, about a foot down. I filled the hole with crushed stone, and topped it off with sand to provide a softer landing for my chipshots (Both the sand and the crushed stone came from a nearby worksite, the guy charged me 50 bucks for whatever I wanted, kindof like a buffet!). Then, together the flag and hole were about 25 bucks. So, total that up, and I spent $210 on my own putting green, plus about 3 days worth of my own labor. It's not beautifully landscaped like the ones on TV and those websites, but it does the job.

Only issue I have with it is that most chip shots outside 20 yards don't stay on the green if they land there. But putting wise, it's very smooth and it rolls very true. Any questions, let me know. In my mind this is the way to go.

Now we've just got to finish the patio and there won't be stone there.

Pretty smart, I like it a lot italianstallion. How's the speed of the green? One thing I really like about most artificial greens is that you can make them SO much faster than normal greens without any of the maintenence headaches.

Southwest Putting Greens put in the artifical green at my practice facility. It's awesome, it's lasted very well in the hot texas sun, and that sucker if FAST (over 12 on the stimp). The only maintence required is blowdrying it in the morning. Literally 15 minutes after heavy rain the green was bone dry. It's not modular like the one you mentioned above, but the quality is great and a 20ftx8 green was $1100 I think.

We have the 9' Training Aid model at work. We use it to fit for putters and teach with our Science and Motion Putt Lab system.

I would highly recommend the Tour Links greens. They are durable, relatively fast, stable, and have a little undulation. Great quality for the price for sure.

Which model were you thinking of?

Italianstalion,

your green looks amazing . congrats

Thanks. I get alot of use out of it. And, like regripping my clubs, a certain element of pride comes to mind knowing I did it myself.

I highly recommend that everyone puts something like this in. It's not expensive at all, and unlike the rug in your living room, you can create break, uphill, and downhill putts. All it takes is a few days of your time, and giving up on buying that used Scotty in the BST, and you'll have something you can look at everyday and practice on. Well worth it, and it has improved my putting ten feet and in. When we have parties at our house, everyone wants to play chip and putt on the thing, so everyone gets use out of it; even if they don't play golf.

Drez77, you PMed me but I couldnt send you a follow up. See if your inbox is full.

Anyway, to answer your question. Take a look at your local Home Depot, in the carpet section. They should have an isle that has huge rolls of carpet, and one of those rolls should be the green astroturf I used. It comes 12 feet wide, and you can get it as long as you like. I'm sure if you wanted to you could join sections together. You should be able to get it for around 60-70 cents a sq foot, so the price isn't unreasonable.

Let me know if you have any other questions

Vince

I recently bought the 4X12 model. I chose this over others such as the BigMoss because I like the fact that you can putt on a level surface into a hole and not uphill like most mat style putting greens. It was easy to assemble and so far it has been great. I have it set up in my basement for the winter so I can't say how it holds up outdoors but I will be moving it out by the pool once the weather warms up a bit..

I use it with the "Putting Arc" to practice my putting stroke. If my first few rounds are any indication, my putting has vastly improved. (or could it be because of my new "Q-Link" necklace... :golfer: )

I bought an 8x12 Tour Links green a year ago and had it on my patio until last fall. After my friend and I built a loft in the garage to make room, I moved it in there so leaves wouldn't fall on it and I could use it when it rains. I highly reccommend the Tour Links greens to anyone that wants a realistic home putting green without having to spend 5-10K on a professionally installed outdoor green. Now only if I could somehow make room for a full scale simulator in the garage. I wonder if my wife wouldn't mind parking her car outside?

P.S. I also have a pool table in there so I think my wife will probably say no to the simulator.
