Homemade swingweight scale for a poor man

Interesting, walk me through how you use this setup

Sure. I find the balance point, measure from the balance point to the grip end, weigh the entire club, and then plug the numbers into the swing weight calculator. Swing Weight Estimator

It’s probably not perfectly accurate but for my purposes it’s close enough. Also, I know my AP1 710s are supposed to be D1, and most of the clubs were within 2 swing weight points of that (D1.5, D2, D2.5 and D3). I assume the variance is either due to manufacturing tolerances or my inaccuracy measuring length and weight.

What do you use for fulcrum distance on that calculator? 12 or 14 and how do you know?

Buy a SW Scale. Have a friend order it and have it delivered to him then you pay him cash. I have done this for friends so their wife does not see the purchase.

^^^^^I've been using one of the swingw.com SW scales (V2) and like it, easy to use and seems to be accurate and repeatable, just need a small kitchen scale that measures grams accurately. Looks like they have come out with a couple newer SW scale designs since I bought mine.

Use the 14" setting.   That's what all modern swing weight scales are based on and what 99.999% of builders use.

The digital one is tempting but if looking to save a little the XL scale is a newer design I would probably consider if looking to buy, it eliminates the need to measure and mark 14" at the end of each club that you have to do with the V2/V3 scales, probably no more accurate, just speeds things up.

OP here, I was surprised to see this pop up 13 years after I started it. At the time, we were trying to get our house paid off and it really wasn't in the budget to buy a scale for what I thought was going to be a one-time use to build the irons I would surely be using for at least ten years. Over a decade (and probably 10 sets of irons) later, I am glad I was able to find a nice Maltby scale off of Craigslist. That said, if you are just getting into tinkering the measuring/weighing method does provide pretty accurate results.

I agree. Bought the XL a few months ago and it is very easy to use. One thing that is really important is to make sure that the table/bench/scale is level or it will give false readings.
