Question about a provisional

Recommended Posts

I had a situation come up today, and I'm not really sure how to go about scoring it properly. I hit my tee shot left, toward some trees and houses. Not being sure if it was ob or in play, I decided to hit a provisional. I proceeded to top my provisional into the pond in front of the tee box. I hit a 3rd ball into the middle of the fairway. Now, am I automatically laying 5 in the middle of the fairway since my original provisional went into a hazard? Or, if I find my original, am I still entitled to play it as my 2nd shot?

I ended up finding my original ball in play, albeit in the trees, and played it out (still took an 8 thanks to a couple of duffed pitches from the trees).

Well, since you re-hit off the tee after going in the water with your provisional, you effectively abandoned your first ball, so in a tournament setting you would be stuck playing your third tee shot, lying five in the fairway, but since you didn't play that ball out and played your first ball instead, you will incur a 2 stroke penalty on top of whatever your score was for that hole....in stroke play anyway.

Just going from memory here, I don't have my rule book handy.

You were still able to play your original ball if you had not played a shot with your provisional from a spot nearer the hole where your original ball was likely to be. See rule:

But with the provisional going in the drink, and re-teeing to hit again, isn't that playing the provisional? The rule doesn't allow a drop closer to the hole, but still by taking a drop or a re-tee you're playing out your provisional, so the first ball is abandoned, right?

I love golf rules. (sarcasm) lol

Nope, even though your provisional goes in the drink, you are able to keep playing the provisional ball or it's replacement with any associated penalties until you get to a spot nearer the hole where the original ball is likely to be. If you find the original, it is now the ball in play, and all strokes and penalties made with the provisional are forgiven.

Now, if I could only have those 2 duffed pitch out's, and that skulled chip over the green back, I'd be in bidness. lol

Thanks for the clarification.
