Least favorite / most ridiculous ball of all time?

Recommended Posts

My least favorite, other than the Top Flite rocks, were the Wilson TC2. There's an open field in my home town where I would go to hit a bucket of scavenged balls, and invariably, the ones that flew sideways the most were the Wilson TC2's. Someone gave me a couple of sleeves of the dang things...even brand new they were horrible.

I had a yellow Titleist Balata 90 that I found, it was fun putting with it and watching it wobble due to the out of roundness.

Most likely the 2009 ProV1x. For some odd reason felt verrryy heavy. Also any of the Top-Flite XL balls are like round, smooth, & dimpled rocks....

I do some landscaping work for an older couple, and the husband plays golf and keeps a few balls in the backyard to chip around. One of them is a classic Spalding Flying Lady. It might have been a fine women's ball, but what a funny name. I'm pretty sure I hit a few of them when I was a junior in the '70s-early '80s.

My brother-in-law used to give me a dozen or 15-pack of Top Flites (Plus, XL, XL-5000, you name it) every Christmas. Though he was a very good golfer -- a club championship contender -- he has never thought a particular ball made much difference in your game. But since they were free, I played them; they shanked, topped and sliced out of bounds just a good as a Titleist. :D

Man as a kid I loved the Magna balls, the marketing scheme worked on me. My ball of choice after that was Titleist Tour Distance 90. Then progressed to the Professional 90 or 100 balls. I know that is not super old but it is for me.

I found one in a range bucket this evening, it was called THE INTRUDER!

Can you imagine the marketing meeting for this thing.

"So what are we going to call our new ball?"

"I know, lets call it The Intruder" (sound of muffled laughter)

"Any more suggestions?"

"Nope"

The Intruder it is then......................

What is this?. . . . .

LOL Christmas decorations perhaps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a seriously funny thread

I recall we used to win something by Evansgolf for 2s at a few clubs, way back in the day in New Zealand, logo with a Mushroom or something on it. I think Bob Charles had something do with it. Not good, but that was the era when the Ultra was popular.............

I know it's off topic but...
Seeing your comment about ridiculous names, it reminded me of a car I saw once - a Yugo "GTY". The thing was falling apart at the seams. When I pulled up alongside, it had a wide racing stripe along the side saying "GRAND TOURING YUGO".
Nothing grand about that brand!

Anyone remember the old Ram 3D? I hit those as a kid and I think they were a solid ball.

I actually broke one in half off the first tee one day.

Also, most any thing from Top Flight or Pinnacle.

Top-Flite System C (and T I think)! Hands down. That concept cracks me up.

Condor. Remember those? They were an illegal ball (slightly smaller and heavier for more distance).

"How about the Top Flite balls that were made specifically for either Callaway or Taylor Made drivers?"

Oh man... great reference. What a load of crap those were. It was great because Callaway and TM wanted nothing to do with them.

I second the Top Flite Magna and Aero. Both kinda ridiculous. Although I did like the old Titleist HP2 Tour which also had some goofy dimples. Of course I was a mid-handicapper kid back then so maybe the performance of that ball was worst than I remember.

I actually liked the Maxfli Revolution, but it definitely didn't last long.

Good call on the two-colored Ping balls. Hard as a rock, but did look coll rolling on the greens.

Does anyone remember the first model of the Top Flite Tour Ultimate (they also made a firmer version which was terrible)? The boxes were bright orange. Anyways...that ball spun out of control! It was way too short and soft off the tee but was fun to play around with on chips and lobs. I would be shocked if a higher spinning ball has even been produced.

I have not seen anyome mention Platinums... Those things are like rocks covered in more rock...

I have found 1 person who will play the Sponge Bob Square pants ball... My 9 year old, we were walking through the golf shop and she spotted them and went absolutely nuts. I couldn't bring myself to buy them for her... For shame

Anyone remember the Polaris from the late 1970's? It inspired a USGA rule change. The Polaris had deep dimples around the equator of the ball, and shallow dimples at the poles. The ball would self correct a slice or hook midflight. Was banned in 1980.

Ahhh, the Polara.ban.gif

I did not even know they still existed. I thought they went out of business in 1980 after the ban.
