Epon AF-302's vs Miura CB-501's

Recommended Posts

I feel like getting another set of irons, and I am thinking about either the Epon AF-302'S or the Miura CB-501's and wanted to get some input.

I had some Miura CB-201's and I thought they were a little diggy on soft fairways. Currently I am playing Callaway Proto's and love them, but the Epon's look kinna tasty.

Any thoughts?

My thoughts - the only reason i'd change my epon 301's is to get the 302's :good:

I'm sure the Miura's are just fine too... but was originally looking at a fitting to finally sort out what shaft fits me best, and reshaft my 301's - but there's an Epon shop at a range i just visited, and compared the two 7 irons. the 302's are even better looking due to a little less offset and the heel is a nicer shape & toe too, it seemed.

so what dose the sole design look like on the AF-302's? I have looked for some pictures to see what type of bounce the 302's are playing and what type of leading edge they have. I am a little shy seeing how the Miura's are really just desgined for firm fairways. Just want to make sure the Epon's dont dig. I am also interested in the toe design, I am really looking for some toe relief, and heal relief.

The pictures on Tourspecgolf, makes it hard to tell.

I own the AF-301, and have demoed the AF-302 irons. Cosmetically, they are an improvement over the AF-301, but I didn't find them significantly better than the AF-301. If you haven't tried Epon irons, they are worth the consideration. Were it not for alittle more offset than I prefer in the AF-301, I would never have moved them to backups. Epon makes an excellent iron in my opinion. By comparison, they were more playable than the CB-202 that I owned. The sole is wider in the AF-302, but versatile from different lies. Moreso than Miura irons.

If its still floating around, GolfWRX member, idrive, has offered up his demo 7i AF-302 to several members. The line may be long, but its worth it to demo. Unless its been reshafted since, he agreed to let me reshaft it with a Nippon Superpeening Blue stiff (triple softstepped to play R-flex).

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but can anyone else who has actually hit both the AF-302s and CB-501s share their opinions? I want to get a new set of irons, but in order for me to try the AF-302s, I need to drive 4hrs up to Michigan. Just wondering if they are worth the drive.

Also, does anyone know if either of these sets will be replaced anytime soon? I would hate to get a set and have its replacement come out soon after my purchase.

I didn´t ... the previous owner did.

I bought the Modus 3 from him first and a couple of days later he told me, he wants to sell the heads as well. So actually I reunited the Modus 3 (still the Epon stickers on) and the heads. :)

These will be taken care of, no doubt!!!

Teaser anyone?

I am not sure I have hit them extensively...but I have hit the cb-501 in multiple shaft configurations on different days in different places, not just one time on a monitor.

The last time I hit them I got along a little better with them but still not as well as 302s. 302 has more sole width and a lower CG, and a bit more offset, combined with more leading edge relief to make them friendlier for most players. The 501 isn't incredibly difficult to hit, it, to me, just isn't as easy as the 302. 302 is softer and more rubbery feeling whereas the Miura is more solid.

I'm not sure what, if any, "player's cavity back" is any more forgiving than a 302. I am not sure it even really is a true player's CB when you really analyze it. Lots of GI in that design. The Miura is a better looking club imo. I love the looks of Miuras at address.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

How would you guys compare either of the 2 sets with 712CBs? I was fit last year for the CBs, but I never pulled the trigger on the purchase.
The 712cbs are good but not more forgiving than the other two. I had the 712cbs prior to my 501s. While the 712cbs were good, I felt there was zero forgiveness. It was more like a mb model. If I were to range them in terms of forgiveness. It would be: 302s, 501s and 712cbs.

Another good set that set ups like a 302 is Srixon ZTX II irons. Has a similar look to them and they feel great. They're def more forgiving than my 501s.

Always Changing!!!

Thanks for your input, ahbot and morebeerbettergolf! I love the look of the CB-501s but I guess I owe it to myself to try the AF-302s if I'm gonna drop that kinda coin on a set of irons.

BTW morebeerbettergolf, I see you're from Illinois. Where were you able to try the Epons? Did you go to Pure Impact Golf?
Definitely give the AF-302's a hit! My uncle has gone through all the Miura's and then had an AF-Tour/AF-302 combo set that was so good I bought it off of him. The leading edge grind and sole is perfect on Epon's and it doesn't dig in. My main complaint with all the Miura's is they dig too much for me.

AF-Tour and/or AF-302 with Modus S3 is super smooth, crazy accurate, and has a nice low/mid traj.

Thanks for sharing, TechyHead! The 302s sound like they'd be a better fit for me as I tend to dig, so I'll def give them a try. My friend is getting married in Michigan near a dealer who carries both Epons and Miuras, so luckily for me, I'll have the opportunity to hit the 302s and 501s side by side. The only thing is...the wedding isn't till August and I'm itching to get my first set of JDM irons.

Played the 501's for a while and loved them but hated the look of the pitching wedge

Ive been playing the 302's and haven't wasted anytime looking for a change in irons. They're that good. Main reason for the switch is because my ballspeed jumped up and smashfactor, gained a club in distance with the same set up as my old 501's

Ha I started this thread now I have ended up with both Epon 302's and Miura 501's. So what do I like better. Keep in mind both sets of irons are very nice, and I do not have a apples to apples comparison because they have two different shafts.

My epons 302's have shimada pro lights, and the Miura 501's have the tour recoils. The epons are a very different feeling club all around, and even throught the turf. I actually found my divots were much deeper with the Epons, shocker there, cuz most reports were the 501's might dig.

The 501's deff. have less off set and have a thinner sole but they have a fair amount of bounce. I like the 501/recoil set up better than the epon shimada set up. I may put recoils in my epons to see what that feels like but most likely I will sell the epons.
