WITB Darren Clarke - February 2002

My contract with dimension data means I'm free to use whatever clubs that are the best for me. I've always played forged irons, such as the Mizuno MP-33s I'm using now. Forged blades are more difficult to hit solidly, but when I'm playing well I can shape my shots a lot more. Having been raised on a links, I can hit shots five feet off the ground or miles in the air. The flight I choose depends on the conditions. Because I'm pretty big--6-foot-211/42 and 225 pounds--I like a heavy club. I like to feel it in my hands. My irons have a swingweight of D7; the average on tour is D1 or D2. I must have tried a million clubhead/shaft combinations before settling on an Apollo shaft. The problem is, Apollo went out of business, and only about 40 of the shafts I like are left. I have seven spares. I'm trying to bribe people to get a few more.

 

2-iron vs. 5-wood

 

If I'm on a firm, flattish links layout, I go with the 2-iron. On most American courses, I use the 5-wood. If I have a 230-yard carry across water to a flag that is just over a bunker, I need the 5-wood.

 

3-wood

 

My Callaway Warbird is a 3 (strong) with 13 degrees of loft. It has an old Callaway RCH36 stiff shaft. I use this club from the tee a lot, especially downwind. It has a little more loft than my driver, keeping the ball in the air longer.

 

Putter

 

I'm using a Scotty Cameron Del Mar model that's 3411/42- inches long and has 431/44 degrees of loft. I prefer heavy putters and rotate among three or four Cameron models.

 

Wedges

 

This Vokey Design lob wedge from Titleist has 6 degrees of bounce; I have the same model with 4, 6, 8 and 10 degrees. If conditions are soft or wet, I'll go with more bounce.

 

Cigar

 

I like Cuban cigars--any brand will do. They help me relax on the course.

 

Driver

 

I've done a lot of work with Titleist on my 975J driver, including changing the weight in the clubhead. I use an extra-stiff 45-inch Graphite Design YS-9 shaft, a heavy model (96 grams) that feels like steel yet performs like graphite.

 

Irons

 

My Mizuno MP-33s are specially made for me in Japan. They have a thicker top line, are more rounded in the toe and have more offset than a standard set. I like them to look a little more "chunky" from above.

Very impressed with (and happy for) Darren Clarke. Once it was obvious Mickelson and Bjorn weren't going to win, I found myself cheering for DC, in what is a definite feel good story.

His irons shafts are some sort of Mannoco TT prototype that has been out a year now on tour but will never come to the public. Very expensive to manufacturer so the

public will not see them.
