Accidently bumping the ball during practice stroke

The league I play in is very casual, most of the golfers shoot in the 50's for 9 holes. This came up last night and I'm just asking for my own info.

 

Are the rules different for accidently bumping a ball when you are taking a practice stroke depending if you are on the tee or the green?

 

Examples:

1. You have the ball tee'd up but you are obviously not trying to hit it and the toe of your club accidently bumps the ball off the tee. Can you put it back on the tee without penalty?

 

2. Similar situation but on the green (I'm guessing this one is different). You've put ball on the green and picked up your coin. You have your putter a few inches away from the ball and are taking some practice strokes when you accidently knick your ball and it moves an inch or two. What do you do?

On the tee the ball is not in play until a stroke is made, replace with no penalty.

When the ball is in play, one stroke penalty and it must be replaced.

When the ball is in play, one stroke penalty and it must be replaced.

That one seems to confuse a lot of people. The times I've seen it happen on the course, most people assume you have to play the ball from the new spot. Wasn't it Davis Love a few years back who accidentally hit his ball on the putting green with a practice stroke? That's where I learned the rule.

The two posts above are correct. Also a note to add, if your ball is in play and then bump it you need to replace it. If you don't you hit the ball form the wrong spot and is a 2 stroke penalty or a disqualification (which would only happen if you "bumped" your ball a lot closer to the hole or out of the way of a hazard).

Why isnt the bump just considered your stroke? Why does it need to be replaced?

Because a 'stroke' requires the 'intention of striking at and moving the ball'

If the ball simply oscillates the ball is deemed not to have moved.

If it moves a couple of inches away and rolls back it has 'moved' but it doesn't have to be picked up and replaced again.
