I played NXT Tours for a few years until Titleist launched the 2009 version. The old NXT Tour never had the feel of the ProV1x but it was plenty long enough. The current NXT Tour is a step backwards so I switched to ProV1x until I found Nike One Blacks. I'm down to my last dozen Blacks so will probably move to the Tour D next. I don't care what the marketing people say, if you don't have sufficient swingspeed then you really can't get any advantage out of a ProV.
whats the difference between the old nxt and the new nxt, they feel the same to me
Getting back to the original topic. I can't tell you specifically what changed. What I do know is that Callaway won a patent infringement suit against Titleist in 2008. As a result, Titleist had to change the way they make their balls. I believe Titleist had to change the ionomer covers. Whatever they did, what I noticed was the the NXT ball cover became much less durable off my irons and wedges. Some of my friends who also played the NXT Tour noticed the same thing and changed balls too. Titleist appealed the ruling.

The Callaway patent infringement suit only effected the ProV1 line, which is why no other Titleist balls were changed for 2009.

Here is a quick version history of the NXT Line:

2001 - Initial release NXT Tour and NXT Distance. Both 2-piece balls
2003 - 2nd gen NXT Tour, NXT Distance changes to the "NXT". Both 2-piece balls
2005 - 3rd gen NXT Tour changes to dual core 3-piece ball, 2nd gen NXT
2007 - 4th gen NXT Tour, NXT changes to NXT Extreme, Both add Staggered Wave Parting Line & AIM features from ProV1 line
2010 - 5th gen NXT Tour, NXT Extreme changes to the "NXT" again, both change from 392 to 332 dimple pattern

Tried following balls last weekend 45 holes and my impressions on each (36 to 60 degree weather)
I kept these balls inside of house rather than garage so wanted to try them at its best condition.

Prov1
Had most success with this ball, shot 76. Everything was predictable

Prov1x
2nd best ball, didn't perform as well as prov1 around green
This is my summer ball so during winter, I will play Prov1
I don't think this ball works well as good as when it is warm to play

Zstar
Too spinny off the tee. Will not play for now.

Zstarx
Dead feel and making weird noise off the driver

NXT Tour
Ok ball, I don't think it works well during cold season.
Too hard feel off the driver and iron. No checks on greens
I can see it has potential to be a long ball for warmber season but not now.

TaylorMade SIM 2 MAX Ventus Black Velocore
Ping G400 2 Hybrid Tour AD DI
Mizuno JPX 921 Forged Irons
Titleist Vokey SM8s
Bettinardi Tour DASS
Pro V1X low number

Based on what I have read in this topic, I tried out the NXT Tour for a round and a short game practice session. The NXT performed great off the tee and in the long game. The ball had a nice low penetrating flight, and generally was straighter than the Prov1x. Typically, a 3 wood off the tee tends to balloon a bit towards the end for me. The NXT was like a bullet and rolled out nicely. I was testing a new driver that day, so I can not speak to any comparison there against the Prov1x.

From the fairway up to about 80 yards, the NXT also performed well. I could still work the ball well in either direction and the ball checked up surprisingly well on these shots. One advantage was on shots between 120-80 yards the ball did not spin back 10-15 feet.

On shots I refer to as feel shots- 79 yards and in- I encountered some problems for my game. I am very aggressive with my wedge shots and like to keep the ball fairly low and expect the ball to stop quickly after impact. The NXT was simply not able to stop the way I expected it to, and it left me with 45 foot putts, instead of 7 or 8 foot putts. The ball felt softer than I expected on putts, but still lacks that muted feel that is familiar with the Prov1x.

In the end, the ball performed very well and a few changes to my game would make this ball a winner. Until I stop relying on the expected spin of the Prov1x on feel shots, I think a change will hurt my game more than help it. If a ball could have the best of each, that would be something.

I know it's an old thread but very interesting read nonetheless. I just did a google search to see comparisons between the 2 balls and this thread came up. From the comments I've gathered. The nxt tour is a good 15 yards longer off the tee than the prov1x and a good deal longer with irons as well but, has less spin around the greens.

My analysis of the type of player that would benefit from the prov1x would be someone with a higher swing speed that already gets very good distance but could use more control in the long to shorter irons and spin for the short game. To me this ball suites me very well because I already hit the ball long enough so the added 15 yards would only get me in trouble more than it would help. Out of all the balls I've tried I get the best distance control and ball flight with the prov1x for my irons. I tend to fly iron shots further than expected making it very hard get my distances right with other types. My Normal 7 iron goes about 175 yards for reference and other balls similar to the nxt tour will fly well past this mark. I'm guessing the prov1x doesn't fly as far because of more spin. My short game is better with these than any other ball as well. However, I do play a good deal of courses with very fast greens. I can bump and run well with these, pitch or flop depending on the shot and the roll out needed.

The nxt tour is great if you could use the extra yards and prefer more roll out on long-short irons and short game. So it's all personal preference, your game type and skill level.

so I wanted to give a quick opinion of the nxt tour ball. I was offered to play a sleeve of the nxt tour today. Im a higher ss player (106 w/6i) and typically play the wilson duo or pro v1x. I like the soft feel, spin and distance with the duo. It is the best ball to putt with also, hands down. I find the duo can be a little inconsistant with distance for some reason, but is easy to flight.
The prov1x offers good control with irons; including if I need to really shape one into a pin. Miss hits are less forgiving/spinny. Around the green, the increased spin is really nice, but kind of a love hate. More often, approaches hop, check and stop or come back(sometimes pull off green). Its also tough to get ball to release out of sand when needed. Its really nice to putt with; mid soft and reliable speed.
The nxt tour today was very nice and reliable. It has a slightly harsher feel only off the driver, but goes higher and long. Spin is really low as it was a little windy today, but miss directed drives were only in the rough or first cut. Using my typical aim points on my home course were off as well as the ball doesnt fade and draw as much as I am used to, but this was nice. Shots with the 3w were very straight, piercing and long; again slight draws and fades. For me, I can easily get the spin up with other balls but with the nxt tour it was nice to see baby draws and fades that cozied towards the hole a few feet. This was the most impressive to me. Im so used to seeing a ball hop and stop when trying to get it a little closer (both with approaches and pitches/chips). Chip shots were predictable and didnt grab too early. Out of the sand I got great spin, feel and accurate control. Putting was fine; I would say right in the middle of very soft to clicky. There was no distracting click or numbness when putting. Speed was very accurate.
Overall, Id say its less spin than most premium, low spin balls, predictable and great to putt with.
Anyway I wanted to quickly say I was impressed to shoot my lowest round this year so far with a ball Ive never used. I need to try it again.

Yep, it's a perfectly fine Surlyn covered golf ball. As long as you're willing to pay the roughly dollar per ball premium for having the "Titleist" logo it will go as far as any, I've found them to be reasonably durable and it doesn't spin much. Feel-wise, I actually like the regular NXT Tour better than the NXT Tour S for some reason even though I'm the sort of low clubhead speed player the "S" version is pitched at.

My opinion is that if you have the time and money to constantly be checking and tweaking your clubs's (especially driver) spin rates then play the Pro V1x because it simply responds precisely to the club. If the club is off and producing too much spin, the ball will spin too much as well. Whereas with the NXT Tour you have a greater margin of error and it helps compensate for excessive club spin rates.
