Taylormade 2011 Forged -- CB/MC/MB review with pic...

Recommended Posts

Too bad they put so much offset in the MC short irons. I assumed the whole set would have more offset than my R9TP's but you say less in the 3 & 4, that's great. I loved the MB's, especially the PW, but also hit the 4 iron great. I could see myself in a PW-6 MB and 5-3 MC combo set. Never had a combo set though, that still seems a bit strange to me.

Great pics and review. Can you post your impressions of the CB 3 iron? Any thoughts of what the CB would play like as a set? Love the looks of the MC but i like more offset than they offer, which was less than i expected. Thanks.
I only hit it a few times on the range...not enough to draw any kind of conclusion yet. I'm heading out now for a round, and I'll be sure to get a few shots in with it and report back this evening.
Played a whole round today and hit more balls:

The CB just doesn't do it for me...at all...granted it's only the 3i I have, but the MP Fli Hi 3i may stay in the bag honestly. The CB just doesn't even compare to the other two for me. The "forged" feel isn't the same, the solid strike of the MC and MB isn't there in the CB for me either.
Thanks for the feedback on the CB 3 iron, not exactly glowing, but i'm still curious about how the rest of the CB set plays. Regarding the MC, i played the 320 iron and then the LT2 for years and liked them both, can you compare the forgiveness levels and feel of the MC with the LT or LT2, if you know? About the same?

Ok...played 54 holes this weekend:

I take back the "bad mouthing" of the CB. I hit probably a good handful of the best 3i shots I've ever hit over the weekend. It easily nudges aside my MP FliHi.

The MB and MC are fabulous, but if I had to buy a straight set (no combo), there's nod doubt that despite the awesome looks of the MB, I'd buy the MC in a heartbeat. They are hands down the most solid irons I've ever had. I have more confidence over my 4, 5, and 6 with them than I've ever had. The flight it on a great trajectory and feel very strong at the point of contact.

I am a collegiate golfer and I play Miura cb 202's. Due to the new groove rule I have to get new irons fairly soon. Do you guys think the new MC's would be a nice replacement of my Miura's? The new MC's look wonderful and I have hit the MB's and they feel great.

2011-02-17_11-48-02_544.jpg

MB 7-PW: Very solid feel yet again. The SW screw being in the sweetspot area gives is a strong feel at impact. I thought they would provide a little more boring flight. I was hitting the MB 8i and my S59 8i on nearly the same trajectory. Not quite the difference I saw in the 6i MC vs S59 test. The offset is perfect...these things just want to fly directly at the target with no curve--isn't that what you want from your low irons?

Great review! And great set up you've got going on there, loving the combo of CB/MC/MB.

Btw, in the above photo you have what looks like extra tape lower down the grip, just out of interest how many layers top and bottom, as i wouldnt mind something similar myself.

Also, the lofts of the MC set are 1 deg stronger than the lofts in the MB set, this might explain why the flight is a little higher/less penetrating. I have been thinking about getting a similar combo set to you but either having the MC (3,4,5 and 6 irons) made 1 deg weaker and leaving the MB irons as they are. OR, the other way round, with the MB's 1 deg stronger and leaving the MC's. I will decide when i get on the flightscope and check spin rates/ launch angles etc. The only issue is with swing weights, the CB and MC irons are D2's but the MB's are D2.5, but i would imagine that they would be easy to adjust during manufacture due to the weight inserts behind the sweet spot?

I'm leaning towards the MC/MB combo simply because you can get a 2 iron in the MC set but not in the CB set. I like to have a powerful iron to use off the tee when i'm having a bad day with the driver (which is quite often!)

Anyway, i tried the MC six iron out at The Belfry in England about 3 weeks ago and it stood out amongst other clubs such as Wilson FG Tour (a close second btw), Nike ProV Combo and Titleist AP2 irons. The feel was sweet, not so much buttery but crisp and solid, and the flight was reasonably high but penetrating. The same DG R300 shaft was in all clubs. The MC's just felt the best and i was also strking them consistently well too, so i am sold.

So, in a couple of weeks there is a Taylormade Tour Experience day at my local club and i believe that they will actually make the clubs for you there and then for you to buy! Can.Not.Wait.

Let me know what you guys think, particularly about the swing weights and adjustability during manufacture/custom making.

None. I've always been a traditional loft/players iron guy.

I've picked up distance in the past year...a good bit actually.

In my experiences, unless the lofts are different or the lengths are different, irons are basically irons. If one of these is at 40* and a Titleist 710 is a 40*, with the same shaft and all the same specs, I'd about bank on hitting them the same yardage.

Of course, comparing GI irons to CBs to MBs is going to be different based on center of gravity, shaft, loft, etc.

I'm seriously thinking about skipping the AP2 712's and getting an MC/MB Combo. Head to head the MC performed/felt better than the 710s and I'm not so sure the 712's will be that much different.

Im gaming a MC/MB combo with c tapers and so far im really enjoying them. One thing with this combo ive noticed in crosswinds the ball just holds its line so much better and easier than i expect. ive always enjoyed taylormade irons, but they really did hit a home run with these. MB are very easy to work and are very playable from all lies, MC just adds a touch of forgiveness but still maintain the forged feel and workability of blades. Wonderful clubs

those of you playing the MC/MB combos...what did you do about the fact that the MC is 1* stronger than the MB. also, what about the difference in swing weights? i have read that the MC is D2 and the MB is D2.5

Did you keep these specs as is or did you change them? i am debating whether to get an all MC set or MC(3-5)/MB(6-PW)

Thanks.

Thanks for the review Muxi, on to my question. How would you compare the feel of the MC to the 2005 Forged CBs?
Been a few years since I gamed the 05, but I'd have to say they're pretty close. These have a SUPER solid/strong feeling at the sweetspot. They are just plain out solid.

I played a whole round today with them, and I tell you what, if I absolutely had to choose one set (no combo), I really think I'd go with the MC. The MB is beautiful, and a fabulous set, but I'm very impressed by the MC.
great review Jay I had the MC's and fell in love but decided i had to have MB's in the 7-P. LOng story short , I got the MB's in 7-P and ended up selling them because the MC's feel that good and offer the sam flight ability with just enough extra forgiveness.

I like these just almost enough to get rid of the '05 TP forged
, but I'll keep them because they're tour issuewith a leading edge grind that works well for me when the ground is like concrete!!

amazing sticks (i have TT monacos in mine which I really like as well!!)

+1 have triedthe AP2's twice now and as a titleist lover , I just dont see all the love for theAP2's. I hated the feel and thought the 690.CB was a MUCH better head. IMO the MC's blow the AP2's away without question!

MB/MC rock....cb will be discontinued replaced by r11, which makes sense....it's just between a 2.0 and an r11, so a TaylorMade buddy said they will be gone soon
