dropping the 3 & 4 irons

adding extra wedge
I am tinking of dropping the 3/4 irons of my 670's and going back to a trusty Mizzy HiFli 21*. I want to add a dedicated sand wedge. My new S M Vokey are great for playability but the bounce wont work well in the sand. I dont want to fool with the Vokeys because I got them really dialed in. I am thinking of going back to a ping EYE2 SW which I think is great out of the sand. I am going to look for one with a good amount of bounce. Am I crazy for doing this???? Am I hopelessly grasping for a slight advantage?????

Please send me to therapy!!!!!

Of course, the best set anyone can carry is the set that works the best for you.

Having said that, if we go by the numbers, adding a dedicated sand wedge might not be the most efficient use of 14 clubs. I think your 670 PW is 48, thus your wedges go 48, 54, 60. That's a pretty good separation.

Your dedicated sand wedge really would be dedicated (like you said...duh...). It would probably be a 56, right? 56 and 54 are pretty darned close together. Conventional wisdom would caution against carrying a club you'll only use a few times a round... or never, if you're playing well :help:

It would be more efficient to go 48, 52, 56, 60 (standard 4 wedges) or 48, 54, 60, 64 (ala Dave Pelz), carrying clubs that you'd be more likely to use more often. Of course, that would mean tweaking your current wedge setup.

Then again, golf isn't always about efficiency. It's about picking what's right for you. Best way to find out is to give it a try. Great thing about golf equipment, you can always change your mind.

I have dropped the 3 iron only (almost impossible for me to hit that demn club)

I use several other combinations depending on the course I will play...

The 2 standard combinations are:

Short Course: Driver, FW 3, Hybrid 22, 4-PW, 52, 56 and 60 Wedges

Long Course: Driver, FW 3, Hybrids 19 and 22, 4 - PW, 54 and 58 Wedges

I only carry 5-PW in irons and two hybrids between my driver and fairway wood. After that I carry three other wedges along with my PW. It gives me a lot of versatility.

i'm playing a similar setup, too.

i dropped my 3 and 4 irons for fairway wood replacements (5 and 7, no 3 wood), added a hybrid, and have gap, sand, and lob wedges in the bag. gives me a big range of versatility. :help:

Right now my vokeys are lower boune for GREAT playability from the rough and tight fairways I play on. But they just dont feel or perform like I would like them to out of the sand. That is the reason about going to a higher bounce 56* SW for that instance.
