Hey Gang:

Something miraculous occurred the other day. I went to upgrade my old school cell phone. I mean this phone was old.. beaten and broken. So with some rewards dollars I had enough for a free upgrade. The girl asked me if I ever thought about a plan... I said no. So I gave it some thought and did the credit check nonsense. I got approved and walked out with some 21st century technology. I turned down a Blackberry and iphone 3 and got a Samsung Galaxy Android.

I won't be using it too much but does anyone use the Golflogix GPS App?

Also Skydroid for $1.99 is supposed to be very accurate as well.

I have Skydroid and it is excellent. If you are interested in an accurate GPS app without a lot of bells and whistles I would get this. Last week I was checking yardage and the person I was playing with asked if he could see it. After I hit the shot I look over and he's holding my phone and his Skycaddie SGX next to each other. He shows me the screens and they have exactly the same number. Best two bucks I ever spent.

Depends if you want GPS rangefinder application only or scorecard or both options with some statistics. It also depends if you play on many different courses and want to load data or you play just a few and can upload data by yourself.
Take a look at those : Skydroid, [u]Golf Frontier GPS[/u], Free Golf GPS Range Finder... They are free or really cheap. I would really recommend to try any application before you buy it.

I use FreeBirdie GPS on my droid. Not too fancy...front, middle and back of the green and its free.

Looking for a GPS app just to measure drives. Can anyone recommend a free app that one can simply click measure from the teebox to the ball?

I use FreeCaddie. It's winter in the Northeast so I don't know if any changes have been made, but last year I had no problem using that on my DroidX for an entire round without the battery being killed. Now mind you, I would put my phone to sleep after I would pull it up to minimize the drainage, but it gives you the distance to the front, middle, and back of the green. If you want the distance to hazards, distance off the tee and other shot distances, and record your data the Pro version is $5. SkyDroid Golf GPS is a good app. Seems fairly accurate with most courses. Can track individual shots as well.

Tried GolfLogix and didn't care for it. Tried to use it on the next round but it was unable to connect... Bye, Bye, Birdie!

Picked up SkyDroid for $2 and couldn't be happier. Supposedly, there is an update in the works that will include scorecard and stats!

Another fan of SkyDroid here. Have used it while also using a Golf Buddy and the yardages were pretty much right on. Using it on a Droid Bionic. Have since bought a range finder and almost never use the Droid for my usual courses but the SkyDroid app is great for new courses to see the big picture.

Tried the Golf Card gps/scorecard app today.

Free, gps, scoring, stats and distances to bunkers. Didn't drain my battery like the Golflogix did.

It's solid.

Have used Skydroid extensively. I have a Skycaddie GPX that i use also but sometimes I decide last minute to play someplace I've never played so haven't loaded the course into the skycaddie. Skydroid works well and is fairly accurate for it's information. Worth the money if not more.

One minor point to consider. In several states, the use of a smart phone app such as Skydroid, golf logix, etc etc is illegal to use even for the posting of scores, let alone tournaments that allow the usage of electronic devices. For example, it's illegal to use in any event or posting in the State of New Jersey. Regular items such as the Skycaddie, etc are legal but any smart phone is not. They feel that since the smart phone can have any app on it including wind/slope adjustment apps and they can't control the usage on the course, they felt it was better to outlaw any device that could contain both altogether.

So if you're a moderately serious golfer, you need to be aware of this.

SkyDroid is no doubt the best GPS golf application for Android. Almost all courses are on there and its so cheap! A lot cheaper than those expensive Sky Caddie units.
