Good question. I just switched from a KZG CH2 15* 3 wood this year to a 904F 17* 4 wood. Nothing wrong with the KZG, but I picked up the Titleist for $40 off the used rack. The 4 wood is easier to control off the deck. I believe that the shaft is 1/2" shorter and is easier to control. The 3 wood is longer, but at the expense of some accuracy.

Not an easy answer since they are not both from the same manufacturer with the same shafts. For now, the 904F is in the bag. I am lurking the local shop for a used 904F 3 wood since the new Titleists are out. Hope I can score a deal similar to the 4 wood.

I play the 904F 17* 4 wood and 904F 22* 7 wood. The 17* replaces the 3 and 5 woods and I have not lost a lot of distance and in fact gained distance due to the higher and more consistant trajectory. Also allows me to carry 4 wedges. The 22 * replaces the 3 iron I have no need for a hybrid since it's great from tough lies. The 904's are great fw's but may be tempted by the 906F 3 wood.

I still use a beat up Orlimar HipSteel 4 wood I got in the used bin for $10. It had a some marks on it but it's awesome even with the stock shaft.

i love your question, as i can see a lot of par 4 holes in particular that are lay up, then over water where i have/play that this would come up... not to far off the drive, then go from there...

can i ask your general yardages with your:

Driver

3 Wood

4 Wood

other long iron etc... all of these off the TEE, as that is a consistent lie. (lye?) how do you spell lie?

That being said... i guess for me, if i had a 4 wood i would be at????

driver 240

3 wood 210

4 wood 190-200 ???

Hybrid seems about where the 4 wood is???

I always go back and forth with this one. Either a 15* 3 wood, 18* 5 wood and 21* hybrid or just a 17* 4 wood and a 21* hybrid. I have more success with the 17* 4 wood/ 21* hybrid combo. The 4 wood is almost as long as the 3 wood but a lot more accurate and easier to hit off the deck. I have a Titleist 904F 17* 4 wood and a 21* Bridgestone J33 hybrid and they cover my yardages from 190 to 220 yards. Too bad, Titleist does not a 4 wood in their new 906 line.

I'm currently playing 14*, 19* and 21* fairway woods with great success. The 14* gives me the extra distance on par 5's and the other two replace the 3 and 4 irons.

Driver - Cleveland Launcher Turbo 10.5* Miyazaki 5R
Hybrid - Cleveland Halo #2 16* Miyazaki 6R
Irons - Cleveland CBX 4-PW Miyazaki 6R
Wedges - Cleveland CBX 50* & 54* Rotex
Putter - Cleveland Frontline Elevado
Ball - Srixon Z-Star

I use a Callaway BB (2004) 4+ wood (16*). To me that club is the best of all worlds is easy to hit off the deck and the tee. It goes about 235 for me, so it is very versatile.

I also carry a 20* Nickent hybrid that plays nicely as well.

IMO for most players it should be Driver, Fairway wood (loft of your choice) and a hybrid (19-22*), then you can maximize your wedges.

I'd rather pound a 3 wood 270 yrds.

But I can't even hit it 250 consistently.

So I've opted for a 16 deg 42.5 in. 4 wood - I get 250+ off the deck consistently. I'll take it.
