Dick's and Nike - a bad combination

Recommended Posts

Nike tour cart bag quality
Last summer I bought a 2009 (new) Nike Tour cart bag, their best bag for around $150. Really a nice bag. Then a few weeks ago (it was not a year old) the rivet holding the putter tube pulled out and let the tube come out. I told Nike and they said to contact Dick's first. Now I have spent a few thousand dollars at Dick's in the last couple years so they should really kiss my a**. Nope, they couldn't do anything because the "90 day" warranty was up and I didn't buy the extended warranty. So I have to go to Nike for my claim. Got ahold of "Paul" at Nike and all I had to do was return the bag to their service center to review etc etc. I informed them that if I did that I wouldn't have a bag to golf with. Sorry, that's our return policy, blah blah blah. Now I went to the hardware store, bought the right size bolt, two washers and a wingnut and fixed the damn thing myself. And I informed Nike they should dump Tiger so they'd have some money to set up a decent customer service department like Adidas. I had a pair of Adidas 360 shoes that were 1-1/2 years old (out of warranty) and I asked how I might change a cleat where the plate was broken. Bingo. I had a brand new pair of shoes. No questions asked. I'll be buying Adidas shoes from now on.

I'm glad someone besides me isn't into disposable gear, and also is willing to fix it themselves.

Careful not to hammer the nike rep though, he doesn't make the policies. It's not his fault that their policy and bag are lousy...

Actually I was more upset with Dick's then Nike. I've spent a ton of money there and they just blew me off. No longer will buy from them and I told them that.

I $@#$@#ing HATE DICK'S! I will never shop there again for this same reason. I had a defective product, that was obviously defective.. not broken by me.. where they acknowledged it was defective and STILL wouldn't replace it under warranty. Instead, I have to call Dick's customer service to have the look up my receipt and then call the mfg of the product.

Luckily (and I've said this about golf club mfg's on here) this is the beauty of being a consumer and having options. I will NEVER buy anything from Dick's because they didn't honor the mfg's warranty on a product THEY carry.. the item was $39.99. I put down the pile of $300 in merchandise I was going to buy when the lady started ringing it up.. I let her finish and told the manager who wouldn't honor the warranty that he could nicely return all of that stuff and put it back where it belongs. I will take my business somewhere who regularly honors mfg warranties.

And I am on a quest to put this story in every Nike bag review area and golf forum I can find.

Wow, a few thousand dollars and they should kiss your a**? I need to go to my local gas station and grocery store and tell them they owe me stock or something! But in all seriousness, glad you were able to fix your bag yourself and that you were not out a golf bag while it was being repaired by Nike. As for the customer service of Dicks, I really cannot comment as I was never in management there. I was in management at another retail facility and I can tell you we never wanted to tell a customer we could not help them but unfortunately, there are times when they really cannot. Sucks though and again glad you were able to repair it.

I don't know about you but a few thousand dollars is alot of money to me and you're right, I should add the gas stations and grocery stores. They ALL should kiss my a** when I come in and treat me and others who spend all their money there the way we deserve to be treated instead of taking us all for granted. That's the trouble with this world today. All the greedy businesses could care less about who KEEPS them in business. Rant over.

And when they come out with a reliable electric or other fuel car I'll buy one. I hate depending on OPEC for oil. Second rant over.

I fixed the bag myself. Not an issue anymore with Nike or Dick's so no more discussion necessary unless you want to diss me or something.

It IS interesting that Nike (and the rep I had contact with) KNEW of this problem, ignored the pictures I sent and still insisted I had to send in the bag. I think it might be to make it more difficult to make the claim but that's my own feeling. In any case read these reviews. This was a major problem with this bag.

I haven't had any problems with dicks but that's a solid move with the manager. He got the point and im surprised he didn't buckle at that point.

I was surprised too! At that point, I was so surprised at how they were handling such a small item (racquetball racquet), that there was/is no possible way I would buy anything larger from them.

Not sure where you are from, but Sport Chalet is a competitive retail chain here in California, where they would have replaced the racquet and sent it to the mfg directly. I know the amount of money I was going to spend there wasn't much, but I think last year at sporting good stores I've spent a pretty penny, considering the ski/snowboard stuff was over $5k alone plus all the other misc. goods.. I think Dick's lost a potentially decent amount of business.. Oh well :)

I'm in Florida but I spent 3 months a year in San Diego growing up. Loved weekend trips with my dad to Sports Chalet. They were always solid people back then.

Nice.. then you know what I'm talking about. Places like Sport Chalet for sporting goods make it a really easy decision not to buy anything from Dick's. I wouldn't think twice about buying anything golf related from them, especially after the service I received on my 39.99 racquetball racquet :)

  • 2 weeks later...

The issue is you have a lot of people that abuse warranty and defective policies. A lot of people feel that whatever they buy should last forever be it a $12.00 glove that they ripped by pulling it off by the cuff to 2 year old golf shoes where the spikes are worn out. I have worked at a big name golf store and you should see some of the stuff people try to return and the reasons they give for wanting to return it. It's a joke.
