How to Wrap Leather Grips?

I'll be sure to do that. I won't be doing it for a little while, I'm still in the fact finding stage. But, (especially with winter coming) it won't be too far off. I think I'm pretty close to trying a prototype. I'm pretty sure that given enough time and materials, I could come up with something pretty close. But of course, I'm quite limited in materials, so I'm trying to get it right the first time.


Another idea that just came to me. Wood club builders use epoxy (sometimes with saw dust) to build up an area and then sand it down. Dave Wood recently used it to replace part of a hosel/neck that was lost due to a larger diameter shaft being installed. He sanded it to a taper and covered with whipping.

What about filling a cylinder with epoxy and dipping the shaft (covering the butt so it doesn't go inside)? Once it hardens it can be sanded or grip tape used to change the width, or even a second dip. I have an old shaft as a model and calipers to measure. Maybe epoxy isn't the right material either (a set would take A LOT), but there's got to be something (likely many things) that would work great.

There might be an old timer here who worked for Macgregor or another club co. who can explain the process of applying the rubber and cork underlisting.


I'm sure there most have been some kind of mold and then applied with heat under pressure.

Old topic but I'll see if anyone responds anyway. I'm thinking about trying to make my own underlistings by using cork board and plasti dip that is used to coat tool handles. I plan to kinda grind up the cork board into small chunks and mix it into the plasti dip mix it up and then dip the end of a golf club into it. Maybe it takes a couple coats. I could potentially coat it say four times once the length of the grip, then two thirds of the way down, then halfway, then the bottom (or top) two thirds of the grip. This would give it a gradual thickening and I could smooth it out with sandpaper.

Just wanted to share my thoughts see if anyone had a better idea or tried something similar.

I have done a few hundred leather grips (none in probably 20 years) so I have some experience. I always slipped two collars on the shaft in case I screwed one up. I cut a good many cork underlistings off but then I always used a slip on underlisting. I did rewrap a few old cork underlisting but saving the collar was an issue.

I always used two inch grip tape run vertically. I never used rubber cement. The "skiving" the bottom end of the wrap/underlisting to get the collar to fit was the tough part. I did play with using electrical shrink tubing instead of a collar. It worked well but was not "traditional" looking.

I would wonder if one could take a Winn Excel and peel their wrap off and use what is left as an underlisting? One would have to stretch it down to better control sizing before wrapping but I think it could be done.
