I inherited a Mitsu ShaqX shaft in a TM tour-issue rescue mid I purchased on Fleabay. I recall reading that it is a heavier and stiffer shaft than most in its class.

It is the best feeling shaft I have ever used in a hybrid, solid and strong with VERY tight dispersion. I can see why VJ keeps coming back to this shaft.

I have other TM tour-issue mids with the Fuji 904 (great shaft, my #2 choice) and the Irod (nothing special, but still a fine shaft). But for me, the clear winner is the ShaqX. Might be hard to find though.

I am investigating good hybrid shafts in the 90 to 100+ gram range for my Titleist 585.h hybrid.

What is the best available?

How is the Speeder 904hb?

I currently have an IROD CB 100, but would like to investigate if there is something better out there.

Thanks!

:beach:

You have the IROD on this 585.H?

How high you hit that club already?

904 will hit somewhat the same trajectory as the IROD you have. 904 just feel a bit smoother/softer at impact. The IROD is one of the best shaft if you hook/draw your hybrid a lot.

Basically good or not are depending what are you trying to fix on your current set up.

Yes!

I Have the IROD in the 585.h, 17*. (Got thru Titleist Custom dept.)

I hit the club on a medium trajectory, but definitely higher than my 735.cm 2 iron. (I have DG S400's in the irons.)

The main complaint that I have about it is that it seems to be make a grip feel a bit too large under the right hand. I know this sounds strange, but it is the only club that I have this feeling with. The shaft is a good shaft for a hybrid, however, if I could find something a bit "smoother" I would like it. I have a ZCom BW65 in my 7.5* 905R, a ZCom (Titleist) Pro-95 in my 906f2, and the S400's in my irons. I would like to have a Fujikura shaft in the hybrid as well, but wouldn't necessarily need one in it.

I have tried the V2.... didn't like it. I have tried the NV 85 and 105 hybrid shafts.... they are ok. I have tried the GAT 115 in an old Cobra Baffler. (cool) It was ok too.... but that's it.... just OK.

I just want something with some weight feedback and feels smooth thru impact.

If that is the case, you'll have a better success w/ 904HB then.

For the grip tip, if you use a non corded grip...you can ask the installer to stretch the right hand part progressively during installation about 3/8" to get a smaller diameterright hand area. Can't do anything w/ corded one.

Good luck!

I would highly recommend the Ozik Altus HB as a 90+ gram hybrid shaft. I'm also playing the VS Proto 80, but would think the 90 gram would be equally nice. Between the two, I favor the Altus HB.

Good luck.

i like the Fujikura 904 HB and the Grafalloy C-Note equally as much in my hybrids. The C-Note has a corny paintjob though.

YS9.1 is an AWESOME hybrid shaft... heck FW too.

Great shaft, I know.... but won't work with the 585.h. :) Wrong tip size.

From the responses, the 904hb and the VS Proto 95 seem the most promising outside the IROD 100 CB.

What about those with experience with the NV 105 hybrid?

  • 1 month later...

I know for the most part everyone is suggesting top of the line graphites, some of which Id love to hit too, but might I add the TT Crossfire shaft!

I have tried at least a dozen hybrids seriously and never found one that I trusted AT ALL. Last year I bought a Tour Golf something or other (its a TM Rescue-ish clubhead) and stuck a Crossfire in it. Didnt give it much time, it sat in my basement almost a full year. I took it out for fun and hit amazing shots with it. It replaced my 4 iron. I then purchased another one for my 3 iron and initially stuck in a TT Dynamic Gold SL, same as my iron's. The flight was low and ugly and not something Id rely on for a serious round. I put in another Crossfire and I just had the most amazing ball flight again, just like the 4 iron. Now, I love the SL's in my irons, but the Crossfire is perfect for hybrids. Heavy enough, 106g (???). I can feel the clubhead at the top of my swing more than any other hybrid shaft Ive tried. There is a definite snap at impact. The flight is very boring, but gets high enough to drop and stop from 200 out, or you can play it back and make it roll the ball. I have been amazed at how good these combos have been, I now have confidence from 185-215, and I give a lot of credit to the shaft. (more amazed that I spent less than $30 for each club...) Of course Id love to try the V2's, Irods, etc, Im sure theyre great, but if youre not dead set on one of the exotic graphites, drop $12 on a Crossfire and give it a shot...

I second the altus and VS proto selections. I'm not on the matrix band-wagon, but the altus hybrid is smooth. Currently playing it in a 585H 17. 904HB may get the ball up too high, but a quality hybrid shaft.
