Help me choose last 36 holes in Scottsdale

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I've got a boys trip to Scottsdale (we are staying in the Troon North area) in mid April. I'm looking to play some new courses and I am torn between a couple of courses on my last day there.

Here's what we have so far: Viste Verde on the day we land, followed by 36 at We Ko Pa the next day. On the last day my choices I'm trying to figure out are:

- Play 36 at Gold Canyon - Sidewinder and Dinasaur courses. $170 for the package and includes lunch

- Play 36 - morning round at Dinasaur ($108) and afternoon round at Superstition - Prospector. Superstition won't relase twilight rate ($80) until 1 week before - we definitle are looking for some cost control and need that twilight rate

- Play 36 - Estrella in the morning ($99) and play Raven @ Verrado in the pm. Again Raven won;t release twilgiht rates ($59) until 1 week before but they said it wont be an issue

Would love to hear your thoughts on one of these combos - I've never played any of these. I hear good thing about Dinasaur but nothing about Sidewinder. Thanks

Just got back from a mini-trip there a couple of weeks ago.

I played Boulders South, Troon Pinnacle and Quintero on my short trip. I think 36 at Troon (Pinnacle and Monument) are a must play if you are that close.

Boulders has 36 too...which wouldn't be a bad second choice.

Quintero was really cool, but its 45 minutes from Scottsdale...at least.

EZ links has tee times for both for around $100 to $125.

Thanks for the reply - we have been playing Troon the last couple of years and some of the group wants to mix it up a little plus save some $.

If we don't do 36 on that last day, I'm hoping to convince the group to play 18 at Quintero - I hear that's awesome

Any expereinces at the others?

Have you guys been to southern dunes yet? Whirlwind? Southern dunes is my favorite track out here and whirlwind is a troon managed 36 hole facility.

Dino mountain is cool but IMO, the views make the course more than the actual course design, and sidewinder is nothing special at all.

My buddy Blake and I played superstition and were impressed by the facilities and clubhouse, but left pretty damn bummed by the condition, course layout, and attitude of guys in the pro shop.

Estrella is a really fun course and I've heard nothing but good things about verrado. Bit of a trek from Scottsdale though.

Thanks - Southern Dunes is on the radar. Is there another course by it where you could do 36 in a day?

Thanks for the heads up on Estrella and the distance - I'm droping that from the list.

I called Superstition and since the time we want is past 60 days they has me call their golf shop manager. His voicemail box was full so I emailed him over a week ago and never got a reply - not real good customer service.

One of the guys in the group can get us on The Gallery north of Tucson - is it worth the drive 2 hours + from Scottsdale?

Personally, I don't find Gold Canyon to be all that. The Dinosaur course does have some good holes and a fantastic setting with the Superstition mountain backdrop, but overall just an ok course. The Sidewinder is a total waste of time.

As well, Superstition Mountain is pretty good, not great. Not a bad value at $80, I would pair that with Dino rather than Sidewinder.

The 36 hole combo of GC Estrella and Raven @ Verrado would be pretty solid. Both good values as well compared to the Scottsdale courses. Yes, a bit of a drive from the Troon area but they are fairly close to each other.

A good second round option down in Maricopa to pair with a visit to Southern Dunes is The Duke. Despite the real estate routing, it is a great, fun to play layout that is also a very good value. The drive is not significantly shorter or longer than going out to Estrella/Verrado.

The 36 hole special out at Gold Canyon is not worth the money IMHO . They start you out on the Sidewinder course , Then you can have lunch then off the play the Dinosaur Course . Sidewinder is flat and boring routes through some houses and condo's . I am usually in no condition to play the 18 on Dinosaur from usually having to get up early to make the drive out there etc etc ... Its better off to skip the Sidewinder and play Dino on its own . Like said though the views are stunning there are a few interesting holes but I think it's worth playing at least one time . I havent played superstition mountain course so cant say much there.

I have played the Estrella and Raven@ Verado and Both Courses are Really Good , Layout , Service , Price you can't go wrong with making that a day of 36 . They are a ways out there but Gold Canyon isn't that close either .

What about Sunridge Canyon and Eagle Mountain combo for 36 . I believe they are pretty close by .

Sounds like a great trip though Enjoy .

Thanks for the comments. I'll look into sunridge and eagle that looks promising. I'd definitely like to play Quintero so I might hold out for that and see if prices come down. Thanks for the info on sidewinder, I have not read any reviews on it only reviews on Dino which looks like a must play.

There is a budget factor so I'll roll the dice and see if something around 150 for 36 can be put together close to our place.

Tjy's suggestion of the duke coupled with southern dunes should put you under 150 for 36. The duke is a really fun course, with yummy food in the grill. I'd actually choose that combination over 36 whirlwind and the drive between the two courses is much shorter than that of Estrella and verrado.

I agree with these guys, Sidewinder is a complete waste of time. Do the Sunridge Canyon - Eagle Mountain combo, they are within 5 min. of each other. Play Sunridge Canyon first, it is more demanding , Eagle Mountain is a nice, fun, easy course for the second round of the day. The other positive is the drive will be drastically less than going all the way to Gold Canyon.

Just got back from playing a few rounds in Scottsdale. We played Superstition Mountain, Quintero and We-Ko-Pa. I absolutely loved Quintero and the Cholla course at We-Ko-Pa, definitely would play both of those on my next trip.
