MacGregor Tourney Custom Irons

Here's a set of mine that was recently re-homed back to Oakmont:

Basically the SS1 design that Jack used for the first ~10 or so years of his career. Hitting them gives you an appreciation for how strong Jack was. A towering fade of a long iron with them is a shot I just don't have. The set above was most likely ordered by a member or pro at Oakmont from the Mac custom catalog in the late 70s/early 80s.

I would pay a handsome sum for a set of diamond backs like that.

Beauties. Really like the looks of those Birly. An updated MB design while still paying homage to the classic Winged MT's of the past.

 

Never have seen this particular design before. Thinking they are mid-80's? About the same period as the Colokrom reissues. Yours?

 

Thanks. I'm not sure of the vintage. They were a classic punt on blurry photos and cursory description on eBay. If I had to guess, I'd say a bit later, late '80s or early '90s. They're not strictly a reissue, like the Colokroms and diamond backs - as you say, more of a nod in terms of stampings. The blades themselves are very, very similar in dimensions to the original Muirfields I have, and by extension I suppose, classic VIPs. The grinding is a bit more refined though - nicely chamfered edges.

That's my interpretation of the serial number, Rex. Ironically, it was a left-hander who originally spotted the auction and tipped me off. Tip of the cap to Okesa if you're still out there reading!

The LH Ben Hogan Slazenger Stainless Steel Precision Iron set with Persimmon 2 Wood sale on EBay remains the holy grail for a lot of LH golfers, Okesa (golf122) and me included. This set was proudly made in England.

 

Never, ever saw these irons or woods advertised on these shores, and have asked Teevons to look into the date

 

Didn't the new Ben Hogan Golf Company just file for Chapter 11?.

 

Thankfully, we hadn't finalized that section of George Peters' book.

I found a RH set of those Slazenger Precisions last year. Not only are they very nice, but first time out with them I had an ace with the 3 iron. Still not sure that makes that lh set worth the asking price. Your thoughts?

They may be one of a very few LH Precision iron sets made by Ben Hogan Slazenger in England. No Equalizer, but Exploder.

 

This is a sentinel set, and it was made for someone who knew Ben Hogan. With '50s standards, short shaft lengths and grips,

 

If the set included the persimmon woods, then they might be worth a look....but they don't.

 

Come to think of it.....Where are the rest of the LH Slazenger Ben Hogan Persimmon woods- the 1,3,4?
