Now, That's What I am talkin' about!! Dynamite VIP's Charley. Boy, oh, Boy. The only worn spot on the clubface is dead-nuts on th ne sweet spot.
Is, or was everybody named Penna a terrific ball-striker? have you continued the tradition, Charley?

I used that set for about 3 years. May have to try them . They have propel shafts which are much heavier than the rifle 5.5 s that I have in my current

Stainless Tommy Armour 915T irons. unfortunately missing one of the mid irons. I think Johnny Miller used this set in his prime that he grinded himself. This set has an unusual greenish shaft, i'm not sure the material or if somebody just painted them. Will have to inspect them sometime further. These were a gift from my buddy persimmonpal, who's now into refinishing old campers. Go figure. Still love him tho...

Tim, Clarence Doser's was a tour player and contemporary of Hogan,, Snead, and Nelson. Prominant player and Well known regionally PGA mid Atlantic section. I can understand you having the Chas. Congden clubs. He was a PGA Northwest section pro...your stamping grounds. But how did you end up with Doser's irons?

Ironmaster-

One question I had from this thread-
In the midst of viewing your exquisite MacGregor collection, you had a few "additional" iron sets from your Niles acquisition-
Were there any MacGregor DX iron sets among them?

Rex,
I have one set of DX-2 irons from the hoard. It kind of surprised me that there weren't more sets of macGregor irons from the mid 1960's

Everyone,

I would love to see pics of your MacGregor Tourney Custom irons. Musclebacks, Diamondbacks, 985's, or any others would be great! Love those flat soled, square toed blades!

Keith

They are sweet, Old Pro. Dead center, best irons I have ever hit. Most likely, from late 60s. Enjoy.

Miramar-

From the ferrules, these MacGregor TCs are more than likely 1977, and possibly done by Art Emerson, or Don White.

Thx for the precision, rex235. You mean, from the serial numbers, from the ferrule model or from both? Always curious about the details.

Definitely, they are not "reverse muscle backs", like the original TA 916, 925, 985 and other series, also renamed "Tourney Custom" later on.

Freddie-

Even I own a set of these irons.

here are 3 of them...

They even came from Johnny Millers garage....;>)

I have a set of those model 3800 with olive drab pyratone steel shafts some still have the red True Temper band on them. I do not know if they have been cut down but they are short for me. Now there was a guy on another forum I used to be on that was a Mac expert he told me they were 1940 model and with the OD shafts they were probably made for the military for recreational equipment

I have 3 or 4 Tour issued sets, but here's a really nice set of irons made for,and owned by former PGA and Senior Tour player George Burns. This was during the time Jack Nicklaus owned the company and David Graham was designing.

2-LW - Burns played a 1-iron also - used several types - MacGregor, Ping, and Arnold Palmer.

As long as we are talking customs, I'll take that as an invite to post these again!

Fluffy-

In October, 2012, Don White told me the '71 MacGregor VIP Split Levels were among the first grinds he worked on.

Texsport's MacGregor George Burns Custom VIP Muscleback Irons are examples of the "Shark among Minnows" set.

Of course, those First Flight Arnold Palmer Standard Irons are also a limited edition.

And that Winged MT stamp on the muscleback GB custom grind for the 10 iron....superb.

Here is my set of 985. My brother ordered these along with a set of diamond backs. He liked the diamond backs and as usual I got his hand me downs. These 985 irons. These were ground by Art Emerson who taught Don White. Douglas Sole. Sweet sticks

Tad - those are beauties!

rex235 - here's a closer look at George Burns MacGregor 10-iron.

It sports a mid-size cord grip - bent a little upright and 1/2" long.

I had to reduce the file size to post - I hate it when that happens!

This MacGregor Winged MT 10 iron... with muscleback profile...

This and the wingback profile are the ones I coveted, as far back as 40 years ago.

Rarely did MacGregor translate these profiles (muscleback, wingback, diamond back, 985) into their LH 10 iron models. If at all.

Different LH profiles went only down to the 9 iron.

One LH wedge grind fit all.

Thanks again for the photos, and including the face profile.

(From KAPLAN's).

Miramar-

This might be one of the rarest LH sets of 1955 MacGregor Wingback MT Tourney Colokroms-

As you can see, instead of the M80, this has the "TP" stamp... for one Toney Penna.

According to the seller, these were a custom order for one of the Penna cousins who was in upstate NY. The custom MacGregor wingback "MT" woods with this set are M80Ws.

According to Kaplan catalog info, all of the MacGregor persimmon models with a "Toney Penna" crown stamp were RH Only, yet these are one of the few iron models with the "TP" stamp.

All of the clubs have leather grips.

The irons are 2-9, and include a Sand Iron which does not have the wingback grind.

Have already posted photos of the Sand Iron.

And yes, these have Colokrom faces.

"Art déco", by MacGregor.

An interesting feature is, top line and hosel almost forming a right angle.

Beautiful club!

Thx for posting, Rex.

Beauties. Really like the looks of those Birly. An updated MB design while still paying homage to the classic Winged MT's of the past.

Never have seen this particular design before. Thinking they are mid-80's? About the same period as the Colokrom reissues. Yours?

Laissez les bons temps rouler!
