Lone Tree/Southern Dunes or Dove Valley/Quintero
We are traveling to Phx March 7-11 and need help with our day 2 course selection. We are considering switching out Dove Valley and Quintero with Southern Dunes and Lone Tree (have a friend that works there so we'll get a good deal). We are trying to stay under $600 and as it stands we're looking at about $575. My question is would people pick Dove Valley Ranch and Quintero over Lone Tree and Southern Dunes? Travel Distance is a non-issue.

Thanks

Day 1 - Gold Canyon 36 (Sidewinder and Dinosaur) $220
Day 2 - Dove Valley Ranch and Quintero $120
Day 3 - We Ko Pa (Cholla) - $185

Lone Tree is far from a goat track, but certainly not a destination course.

If you are looking for a good 2nd round to pair with Southern Dunes, check out The Duke. It's also In Maricopa so you won't have to drive far and will have time for lunch.

The Duke is a real estate routing, so no great views or scenery, but it is a solid and fun to play golf course with good conditioning and a value price. Would be much better than Lone Tree.

Quintero is a long way from everywhere, so make sure you get an early start.

If I were picking the course at We-Ko-Pa, I would pick the Saguaro.

Enjoy your visit!

Thanks for the info on We Ko Pa. Why would you pick Saguaro, if you don't mind me asking? I have no clue which once is better so any input is appreciated. Do you have any experience with Quintero? Seems to be very well reviewed.

I did say just above a goat track TJ...wink.gif.....Played there today...it was in pretty bad shape. The fairways are torn to shreds. There are really bad spots..bald. The bunkers are rock hard and filled with big rocks. The greens were decent.

That's too bad. I do tend to overlook conditioning when there is quality of design. Certainly, poor conditions can detract from a round but conditions can be fixed, bad design not so much. Lone Tree fits into the economical/local play market and is an ok design for that function, but if the conditioning is suffering, there is not much reason to visit. It is not a course you would travel from out of town to see even with good conditioning. My main knock on the course is the silly island green par 3. ha ha.

That is one pretty damn massive hike between Wekopa and southern dunes

Same for lone tree and Quintero. Like some serious car time! I don't know if I'd be able to play 36 like that.

I would think that lone tree/ southern dunes on the same day and ten Quintero/Wekopa would be more realistic

About 60-75 minute drives, right? Maybe we're just used to it up here in Minneapolis (where I drive about 30 minutes or so for every round) but it doesn't sound like it should be that bad.

Lone tree to Quintero - Google maps says 77 miles, 97 minutes. I don't think you could pick two courses farther apart.

You sould do Southern Dunes & Raven - South Mountain/Phoenix
[/quote]

We would do Raven but can't fit it in. I have a free round at Lone Tree because I have a friend that works there. Can't pass up free golf.

I hear ya. Free golf is the best golf! Raven is one of my favortie courses here.. Not much of a fan of desert courses...

Just came back from Phoenix this morning. Quintero is in rough shape and the pace of play in the afternoon was awful and the staff had no clue as how to get things moving. It's also a 45 minute to an hour drive. The front nine is pedestrian, the back nine is great though. I wouldn't to play it again unless the conditioning improved and I played the first time.

The We-Ko-Pa courses were great. I enjoyed both but preferred Saguaro. They are expensive but offer a 36 hole package for $330. Expensive- but you won't feel you got ripped off. I enjoyed them very much- money well spent. I first class facility all the way around. They sell a bunch of value cards in Arizona Google it) and you'll pay $120 for the card and get We-Ko-Pa for $85 each- pays for itself instantly and may help out on other rounds.

TPC Champions course is a great lay out. You'll pay $50 if you walk (found that out here on WRX- they don;t advertise it). Best deal in Phoenix.

Enjoy - a lot of great options.

Heading out to AZ On the March 3rd for 10 days. Just starting to plot out my rounds, looking to do all different price points. I've seen on this site a couple times where people have talked about TPC champions course for 50 bucks if you walk. What's the catch? Could I walk the Course for that price At 8am? Can you set a tee time for that price, or is it for walk ins? Thanks.

The cheapest green fees I could find at TPC Champions this week are $79 after 2 pm or $99 starting at 11:30 am
