Does golfshot work well in 3G areas as well? I read a couple reviews and it seems like sometimes people lose connection. Are you guys in 4G areas or 3G areas?
Not sure why you ask. There isn't a 4G iPhone, so why would it matter?

Hey guys, are there any "Free Version" golf gps apps that are worth having or should I bite the bullet and pay the $20-30 for golfshot or golflogix? I know the golfshot is a one time fee whereas the Golf Logix is a "yearly" subscription.
Golflogix has a free version, it just gives you center of green, but it still keeps all your scores and stats. Also, they SAY golfshot is a one time fee, but I found the hard way that if you move from an Iphone to android, or vice versa, you have to buy the "one time fee" all over again. Whereas GolfLogix transferred from my Iphone to my android no problem.

I've tried a lot of the other free apps out there, and most of them have you create your own maps, or use maps other user's created, using cheap Google Maps imagery or Bing imagery.

Question about GolfLogix. I'm a new IPhone owner and just downloaded the $19 version of Golflogix this week. I haven't had the opportunity to play a round with it yet, but I'm pretty excited about it. I was looking at all the features and its seems loaded with them.

Anwyay, the question do you guys download a handful of courses up front and keep them there or do you just download them before you play. I'm a former SkyCaddie user and at times I would have to switch out the courses which was a pain. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to me going ahead and downloading the 7 or 8 courses I play reguarly right now, or should I wait and do them one at a time.

Thanks,

I use golfshot on my iPhone 4 and it works well and has no battery issues. I use 20-30% of my battery tops during a round. I don't have push notifications on ever, I turn off autolock (lock manually after every use) and use the background gps 10 min setting. That way it keeps the gps and doesn't have to search.

It is pretty accurate and gives good stats if you enter them. Currently I'm not tracking shots or stats because I'm not swinging well but the first round I did and battery was still good. You will want to unsubscribe to email scorecards if you play a lot, it gets annoying. Definitely worth 30 bucks.

iPing
GolfLogix
V1 swing analysis
USGA rules
the golf channel
pga tour
etc.

there's a ton of apps, which is why the iphone is so popular imo compared to the droid marketplace.

I'm not a fan of the GolfLogix user interface. It is very cumbersome to enter all the data, especially if you use the paid version. I tried it for a couple rounds and it was more work than it was worth. I was spending more time on the app than concentrating on my golf.

Golf Logix is great for keeping track of stats on the iPhone.

I have the original Garmin GPS that was made for Golf Logix and I find that it's much more accurate. I find the iPhone app has been off a full club while the original Garmin/Golf Logix device is always right on.

I am currently using GolfLogix. My only complaint about it is the lengthy re-start/load time there is if you exit out of the app and go to another app during the round or receive a call, etc. I wish the app would continue to run in the background as opposed to having to reload and asking you to continue the round or start a new round and all that.

Is GolfShot better in this aspect? Does it continue where you left off if you were to close out of the app on the phone? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

From my personal experience, Golfshot opens right up where you leave off.

For those of you that have both, does it take up much of your data storage or do you hae unlimited storage. I'm not the most tech savy, so I'm not sure how that works. I have the 2GB plan and right now have about 15 addtional apps on the phone over and above what it came with.

Suprised Swing by Swing isn't getting more love. Used it for the first time today (Droid died and replaced it with an iPhone), and after one use liked it enough to splurge on the Looper version. Not sure what else you could want from an app as far as features, and it was dead on accurate with the guys I was playing with sky caddie and Bushnell.

Also bought a bike mount for the phone off the bay for $4 today to put on the speedcart. partytime2.gif

I have been using golfshot the past few years and love it. Earlier this year, Starbucks "free app of the week" was Golfplan (same company as golfshot) and it takes all your golfshot stats and gives you instructional videos from Paul Azinger to improve those areas of the game. Also tried Tiger Woods myswing and it is ok, but nothing special.

Anyone have a good app for iphone to get flag yardages at the range? I know it wont be exact, but just to get a decent estimate. The ranges around my area don't have the best markers.

you have to buy the premium service of golflogix to get all of the features that even compare to the stand alones

Iphone and Android apps are marginally legal. Some states disallow the usage of any smart phone app to calculate yardages (regardless of whether they can compute wind, elevation or not). Others don't care.

For example, NJ disallows the usage of any smart phone for any tournaments or SCORE POSTING for handicap. Period. You can't use them at all. I think right now there are about 10-15 other states that do a similar thing but I don't have the list.

The others don't seem to care. Most of the putter apps are illegal, especially the alignment ones and green reading but that said there are some that are valid, of course.
