Anyone Know Any Solid Public Golf in the Montgomery County, PA Area?

I moved to the Glenside area for school and honestly even with a thorough google search I can't seem to find any really solid public courses around unless go over the bridge to South Jersey or out of the general area. Any suggestions?

I lived in the Villanova area for a bit and my friends and I settled on Turtle Creek out on 422, Limerick I think. It has a links feel and is always well conditioned and reasonably priced. It also plays reasonably long and is not "trick shot" golf like a lot of the other newer courses around.

Lulu CC in Glenside is now open to the public

I was actually just looking at the website, which says $58 for "member fore a day" on a weekday. Is that still accurate? I have a floating holiday I have to take before July 1. Playing at least 36 sounds good to me.

I live on the "Main Line" in Montgomery County (hence the screen name). Here's a PDF file and link that provides a list of Philly area golf courses, mostly public. Scroll down, it also provides a breakdown of courses by county. http://phillygolfguide.com/rankings.html#bucks

I am a member of a private club, but have played most of the private and many of the public courses.

I agree with the list for the most part. Turtle Creek is nice track and greens are always in great shape. Still dont understand why everyone loves Lederach so much. The rough is still not grown in all the way and the greens belong on a mini-putt course. I love the length and layout, although way too many houses, but the greens are just horrible.

Jeffersonville Golf Club in West Norriton is a great public course if you're okay with only playing 6400 yards. Challenging, well kept and probably the best public greens in the area. Lederach is right there too but their greens have yet to really settle.

I've only played Center Square and that was ages ago. Nice layout.

Center square is well cared for, but it's a boring course IMO. A lot of the same shots and just plays very easy. I play it once a year maybe and it always ends up neon disappointing.

Just played Lederach for the first time on Friday and I could not agree more. Great piece of land, really well kept and certainly could of been a great track but the greens and gimicks have to go! Was looking for windmills and clown heads!

I have played Turtle, Jeffersonville, Bella Vista and many others in the area. Could travel up to Fleetwood Berks county and play Golden Oaks. Really nice track, well kept and reasonable rates.

I think it is. I was a member there for a few years but left this past december. It is definitely worth that price to play. You will enjoy it. Just play before August because they tend to lose a few greens that time of year.

Lulu CC in Glenside is now open to the public, a great old classic, Five Ponds and Heritage Creek up in Warminster aren't bad, Lederach is great. Hope this helps

When did Lulu become public. I can't seem to find any info about it. Do you know how much it is to play there now?

For Montco courses around that area, LuLu and Jeffersonville are two great ones, along with Lederach. Five Ponds is close by and when traffic isn't bad the 422 courses (Bella Vista, Raven's Claw, Turtle Creek) are worth checking out.

I've done reviews and lists for a lot of the nearby courses:

I'm in Jenkintown, just next door and I played LuLu and Melrose several times this year. Both are good courses and semi-private. I also played Northampton Valley several times and that's another nice course that's not too far away. Pinecrest in Montgomeryville is good. 5 ponds, Center Square and Jeffersonville are pretty good too.

Agree with the other comments, Twining is the absolute worst course in the area.

Always looking for someone to play a round with, let me know.

The best part about Twining Valley is that it's pretty much "lol golf." You dot and shouldn't care about your score, because it's short as hell and maintained like dog bleep. I hit a 5 iron on the first hole after you take the underpass across the street and it went about 190 but bounced/rolled the rest of the 45 or so yards into the green (which actually was pretty lush, at least for Twining standards). I think I read that course is under new management, but as far as I can remember it doesn't even have a sprinkler system setup, so I have no idea what they hope to accomplish.

I legitimately enjoy how this thread gets revived from time to time with others in my neck of the woods. I'm at Commonwealth National, and love it. I'd be happy to bring some WRX'ers around sometime.

That being said, I've also made my rounds around the locals (LuLu, Melrose, Pinecrest, 5Ponds, etc.). With LuLu being a Donald Ross design, I was really hoping that management would change over to a group that would just open it up fully public and get the financial support it needs to get back to its prime. It's a great track, but it just didn't seem well maintained. Pinecrest is a decent enough course to get some cheap rounds in on a weekday. Weekends can be a nightmare there being stuck behind a 5.5+ hour round (same goes for 5Ponds).

Twining Valley (now known as Upper Dublin) is definitely not a course you want to spend money to play at. However, a buddy of mine whose kids are in US Kids now, said that they have a great children's summer program.

If you're looking for a beginners course to take some new golfers to, I always suggest Fairways Golf Club. It's an easy walk, very well maintained, and dirt cheap.
