Callaway RAZR by Nikon

Recommended Posts

I've been looking for a Laser pointer for some time, and did a fair amount of research.

i really like Golfshot GPS for play, but really wanted a point and shoot gadget for range play - specifically, working with four wedges with partial swings with the face square an open.

Anyway - based on a few recommendations and a glowing, 100/100 review on the other MGS site, i gave this one a go.

So far so good - it doesn't seem to have any issues locking onto flags, consistent readings in line with expectations, and it seems comparatively small and durable. I liked some of the other ones I saw, but i couldn't get down with flags needing reflectors to get a reading - that wouldn't have worked at the range.

I've taken it out several times now and put together a little grid on a scorecard for myself showing full and 3/4 shots with a square and open face with each of my wedges, and i've been a lot better on my approaches. Scores are falling.

If you're looking for a simple no nonsense point and shoot range finder that is comparably inexpensive, this Callaway unit seems pretty good.

I have the Octane laser - not sure how much different the new razr is but Yes, Nikon makes very good quality range finders - easily the equivalent or better to any other laser manufacturer. However, for some reason the Callaway label seems to turn some people off. I'm not sure why, if a problem did exist, I'd much rather deal with Callaway customer service than those other optic companies.

I just picked one up. So far so good. It has perform exactly as what everybody reviewed. I consider Leupold Gx-3i but pricewise and performancewise, I had to go with nikon. Also this unit has very bright thru viewfinder. I kinda agree with above post about name callaway because I was one of them who didn't even want try initially. But after all the positive ratings and reviews I decided to try and I am very happy for my choice.
You guys should try and compare functionality and price to other brands.

It's the Nikon LR series. 550 and 800 if I'm not mistaken.

Is it the same as a Nikon Coolshot but with Cally branding?

It will give you great service for years and that is a very good price. I bought the LR550 a couple years ago on the insistence of a store manager at Golftown that I really trust. I absolutely love mine, had a lot of rounds and hard use and it has been a champ.

I am looking forward to it. This is my first golf measuring device and I been wanting one since they came out. Yesterday at the course I felt like a boy with a new toy.

Range finders are definetly a gadget guys thing. There was a funny thread about the first thing measured and most said stop sign, mail box, neirbours home. That was me, had to try it as soon as I got it.

I use to have a GPS and once I got the laser the GPS has not seen the light of day. You will love it, problem is you become very reliant on it. My batteries died once and I felt lost . I have a spare battery in my bag now.

I am going to put an extra battery in the bag, I loved it yesterday and today was no different. This mays sound silly, but I feel complete. In my work I use military grade LASER Range Finder (PRLF) that connects with military grade GPS devices, using slant range between the two devices I can come up with determined locations with great accuracy…. OK, back to topic. Honestly, my new RAZR compares quite well with the Laser Range Finder that I use for work… needles to say it is not as powerful and does not have near the same amount of features, but it holds its own ground.

I got the RAZR laser by Nikon this past black friday for $200 at GG, then bought some extra supplies so I could also use my $100 off $400 coupon. ...effectively $150!!! I love this thing. Used it about half dozen rounds so far. Picks up the flag reflectors almost immediately, and it scans for 8 seconds with one push of the button, so I quickly laze the trees behind the flag and a bunker lip in front of the green to verify the distance and get my bearings. It's easy to read the display even in twilight. It picks up pins and landmarks easily as far out as I care to try, which has been up to about the 270yd approach on par 5s. ...whereupon I grab my 7 iron and lay up. :)

This is the only measuring device I've used, so I have no basis for comparison; but, I have no complaints thus far. Of note, in wintertime, my muni cuts two cups in the green and the flag position is alternated by the players as they move through the course. So, if you have a GPS watch, I have no idea how you'd get distance to the pin without guessing. Also, as a mid/high capper, I love the 1/10yd display - really helps me dial it in. ;) I can't imagine what a more expensive unit would do that the RAZR doesn't do (nevermind slope), unless it goes to 1/11yd.

I just grabbed the display model of this at my local Dick's for $200 after 10% off. Been so tired of having to do guesswork out on the course. Can't wait to use mine this year!

I have the Callaway RAZR rangefinder, using in for more than a year now.

It is easy to use and love the compact size.

Once, on an early round in Santa Cruz, it let me down in the fog and would not give any readings, when my friends bushnell (don't know which version he had) was giving him readings in the same fog :(

Usually, I don't play early mornings foggy conditions, so can live with that.

Also, keep a battery spare, there is not much indication when it runs out, it just stops working!

Have a Diablo Callaway laser for 2+ years now and love it. Had a Bushnell Pinseeker for 4 months before that and dropped it on a cart path from 4 feet and that was that. Bushnell would only give me a discount on a new laser and would take possession of the broken one. They fix them and then sale them on the Bay; needless to say, I'll never buy anything from Bushnell again.

I've had the Nikon RAZR for a few months and love it. Wait until a big sale like Black Friday, then stack up the $50 off $250 or whatever coupons GG is running and buy it with some golf balls and supplies. I think I got mine for ~$150. It works exactly as you'd expect - no issues at all. In one shot, you can scan to pick up yardages to the flag, the front of the green, the back of the bunker, the 150 marker, and that tree off in the distance. The 1/10yd display is irrelevant to me but perhaps useful for some.

Cons: lasing a target from 78.2yd out and then shanking your wedge into the bushes. Makes you look like a pro.

Have a Cally/Nikon as well & am happy w/ it. However I would agree w/ the comment on fog; couldn't pick up the pin when Bushnell's would. Keep that in mind if you play in a lot of fog or rain. Fortunately for me, I don't.
