Katrina survivor - Clearly I still have a lot of issues with the whole experience, and it's made me an extremely bitter person.

But having to listen to so many people over these last few years talk about how stupid people were for staying behind, how ignorant and backwards we all are, how we're all looking for government handouts, how they're all so tired of hearing about Katrina, etc. etc. etc....I'm not saying I want people to get hurt, but the irony is incomparable.

Of course, the difference is that New York and its people are "worth helping" and we're going to see the difference in that perception in the coming months. As opposed to all us poor ignorant southerners who supposedly deserved what we got.

My area got lucky, we only lost power for 3 hours during the day then got it back... No major damage, hope no courses or people suffered serious damage

I think you have made a good point....maybe a little harshly to some. But....There is a bias to coverage of the event as if it only happened in NY and NJ. Coastal NC damage from Sandy is similar to Irene, if not worse in some areas. No mention of NC, on any of the national newscasts.

EDIT....I would be remiss if I didn't agree with the thoughts of the OP. I wish the best for everybody who has been touched by this or any natural disaster. It is a very bad feeling knowing there is no place to hide.

Manhattan, esp lower manhattan certainly got porked. No power and some healthy flooding. Luckily I work up near times square where there's still power. No subways or any public transport though. Can't call 911 or anything in most of the boros outside of manhattan. I'm lucky and got put up in a hotel 2 blocks from the office.

Sorry if my opinion and experience doesn't match up with your limited worldview.

PS - If I'm so ignorant, how come you are the one who can't tell the difference between "your" and "you're"? Regardless, best of luck to whatever you happen to be dealing with. I'm not wishing harm to anyone here.

Yes, my apologies. Watching the news coverage is bringing up a lot of bad stuff that I guess I've never been able to deal with. Lots of anger. This guy says it way better than I could have:

Not really sure what the point of this was. I just watched my childhood summers get washed into the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. I've watched friends become homeless. I've watched people go missing. I own a business 12 miles from Atlantic City. So now I have to wonder what is going to come of that for the next 12 months. I am sorry you went thru Katrina... but what you said and/or how you said it is wrong. I'm sorry for every one that was touched by this storm. The people of the area do not get to choose what area get what coverage. None of us asked for this. No one deserves this.

Didn't say anyone deserved it. I said there is a perception out there that the lives of northeast residents are more important than southerners and that they are more "worthy" of helping.

I never said anything about anybody "deserving" this though. I wouldn't wish this on anybody. I am ranting about the inequities of our country.
