Dallas-Ft.Worth area - Public courses that overseed?

Recommended Posts

Just trying to identify any public courses that overseed this fall (2012-2013) to identify some places I might play during Thanksgiving/Christmas trips to the Dallas area. Generally like to play 'green' rather than dormant.

From past experience, these places have overseeded (and I might have to check to see if they did again....I can understand the economy affecting whether a course continues to do so):

  1. Dallas Cowboys course
  2. Bear Creek
  3. Champions Circle

Any others? .... just add them to the list please.

Is that the Fred Couples course? I did notice that course before and wondered about it as it is not far off the path on the way down from Oklahoma to Dallas. Thanks....keep'm coming !!

Cowboys did as I played it last week. The Bridges in Gunter did as well. Heading up north to play it on Sunday. It's one of the best kept secrets in North Texas. A fun course (though #18 is a bit quirky w/ forced carries on every shot) that only gets better as it matures.

I see The Bridges on GolfNow.com listed for $30 before noon/$25 at noon, including cart.

Yes that's the couples course. It has some wild green complexes (see 6 and 14) but is fairly generous off the tee and has a good elevation changes throughout the property. More importantly, it's never that full and I can always get through in a sub 4 hour round...

It's a fun layout but they don't keep it up to shape. The carts are always busted, dying and the greens/teeboxes weren't great when I went the last few times.

I'll let you know how Bridges is after we play it again on Sunday. They have new ownership now that I know has 1) overseeded and 2) gone through to renovate the bunkers as well. Hopefully turf conditions have improved from what Cosmos saw. I last played it in December and didn't have any complaints but winter golf is a different animal from spring/summer.

Thanks...please do. Will be looking forward to your review. Good luck, enjoy.

Have you ever played Sky Creek? I've had my eye on that for a while but have never played it.

Sky Creek is in Keller, a little north and west of DFW airport ... and it's my new favorite course in DFW after shooting my career round there this summer!

It's a great target golf course, always in great shape. I say target, because there are lots of tee's you should hit less than driver (if you're playing from the proper set of tees). Greens have always been immaculate shape when I've played there. its a little expensive, but has that "country club for day" feel IMHO. I don't know if they over-seed, though, sorry.

Sky Creek is a tough course but has always been in good shape when I've played it. It's a solid RTJ Jr design if you enjoy his work. I live down in Victory Park so I don't get out to Keller/Southlake often but I prefer it over the others (Fossil Creek, Iron Horse) in the area.

I got an email today that Tour 18 has overseeded.

mctrees, thanks. Coming down from Oklahoma during either Thanksgiving/Christmas to do a little warmer weather golf (used to go down to San Antonio (The Quary, La Cantera Resort/Palmer courses, The Bandit), but that's a bit of a ride and if you don't have to...well), but I like to play overseeded green stuff if I can :-). Had my eye on SkyCreek, but it's a bit pricey, especially when I've tried to include Dallas Cowboy course for 3 (wife, me, son) in the same weekend (but I love their all inclusive food....like the manager said to me, if you leave this place and you're not stuffed, don't blame me).

I'd be hesitant to put Bear Creek on that list. I played in an outing there last Monday and it definitely didn't look overseeded.

Played Bridges on Sunday just as the cold front came rolling in. The course is growing in pretty good from overseeding and our group was quite happy with the condition. The only downside is they are renovating their bunkers right now (there are prob 90-120 bunkers on the course) and you get to take free relief from them.

Bunkers aside, I'm looking forward to heading back up there again this winter. They've got good food, cheap drinks and relaxed service. All in all it's my kind of golf course.

Thanks for the update....Planning to play during Thanksgiving weekend. If all goes as planned, may head out after Thanksgiving dinner and reach Grapevine around 11pm, check in at Hyatt Place (not bad for $73/nite), get something quick to eat at the Steak-N-Shake (only fast food in that strip open at 11:30pm), then head over to the Black Friday that opens at midnight Thursday right there at Grapevine Mall (don't ask, it's more for my wife; if only they had a golf store in there). Then me, wife, and son will play on Friday (Tour 18-Dallas or The Tribute?), do something that nite, play Saturday (Dallas Cowboys or Sky Creek Ranch?) and catch Bedlam (OSU vs. OU) on the 50-ft screen at the sports bar at the Gaylord Texan, and probably play The Bridges on the way out on Sunday morning and then head home to Ok. Sounds like a plan...hope the weather cooperates. May need to check and see if the Mavericks or the hockey team is playing Friday night. Need to see if I can catch some coupons or online discounts....will have 3 of us playing each time and it will add up quick. Didn't have any vacation this summer and I'm burnt out from work.

Any of you play the Fire Wheel Park or something like that?... any good?

Saw this on www.texasfishingforum.com in classifieds.

Had some family stuff some up and not gonna be able to make the game anymore. I have 4 tickets to Mavs v. Lakers 11/24 at AA Center.

Lower Level Baseline 112, row N, seats 9-12

Tickets are $225 each on stubhub

$200 each if you buy all four, that saves you over $200

Firewheel is fine. Very similar to Sherrill Park in that they are very good city-owned courses at affordable prices which means 1) they get a lot of play 2) course conditions are sometimes less than ideal and 3) they pack their tee sheets like sardine cans (7 minutes, 8 minutes, 7 minutes, 8 minutes).

That's to say that they aren't my first choice but if I don't want to spend much and am not in a hurry then it works out alright.

In my experience, every public course around here that overseeds does it for looks and not playability. Typically very thin, overwatered, cart path only in many cases. The ones that overseed greens are even worse, so slow it's not even fun. Cant wait until I get a chance to do it the right way. Thick , short, firm, and dry, on the dangerous point of life and death. But that actually takes effort.
