Sound Slot

Or beaching, floating face, whatever you want to call it. Who makes em besides Ping and SC? I am looking for one, but I don't necessarily want to pay through the nose for one. Are there other options besides paying somone to do it?

Could even be a nice component maker.

It is very difficult to do. You need ther right blade accessory and a steady head holder. I think Slighter or Palombi charge $40-$60. Not bad considering.

Considered getting this done to my Mil Spec but worried too much weight would be lost. What does it do to the sound? More of a hollow feel? Read somewhere it gives more feedback but how so?

I had a IBDD which was a true beach and it sounded really different like a "tink" noise. The feel was firm but that probably was because of the sound.

FYI - i picked up a used copper ping anser with sound slot for $40 on fleabay (just got to keep an eye out for them). a quick clean up & added a new grip - good as new + patina already done for me. it is a bit lighter than my SC newport. the slot does give it a distinct "ping" sound. i pull it out once every 4-6 weeks.

go fleabay - would be my suggestion.

Tom Slighter just did mine...he did great job. I'll be sending these three in to BOS for a refinish. The putter on the right is the one with the sound slot.

Exactly... $40 is even a bit much... you should be able to find them in the $30 range.

Beware of going too cheap here. I have seen a few examples of sound slots that look like they were gouged by the iceburg that sunk the Titanic. :drinks:

$40 for a sound slot cut that is perfect is a small price to pay, IMO.

I think Tom does great work. The slot and welded neck looks great. I bought the Laguna on Ebay and it had a welded neck but looked really sloppy so I had Tom clean it up a bit...came out really nice. I have some before and after pictures and will post them if anyone wants to see them.

I really don't get the attraction to the standard sound slots in putters. It seems that most people keep looking for putters with a soft feel, but drool over the beached Newports. Sound slots make the putter feel harder, and the lighter putters with the slot give off the even more unpleasant tink. I've only kept one putter with the slot, but that one is my current gamer (Byron). It's a 360 gram head with a thicker face than the standard Pings and beached Newports. This mutes the sound enough to give me just enough auditory feedback as to whether I'm hitting my putts true or not, little more.

Also sienna, I'm 99% sure that the Ping you pictured is manganese bronze (MgBr). The only copper (BeCu) Ansers to make production were the Scottsdale remake, Anser2, Anser4, and Anser5, and none of them had slots. Even if it was a slotted Scottsdale, the stamping in the cavity is wrong. It is possible that your putter is one of a handful of test/house putters that didn't reach production, but somewhat doubtful. It does look bronze from the pictures. Nice putter either way.

i would certainly look to you & others here as expert.... and you are very-very right about the MgBr make up of the putter.

so i stand corrected. eveyrthing looks copper to me - since the face looks like copper & similar to my Pal 4 BeCu. it jut got that black on it which is different than most putter that i have seen.

I had a brand new Cameron Newport Beach putter and when putting with it the ball "felt really dead" coming off the putter face. I sent it to Tom SLighter and he added a "through the sole" sound slot. Sure it weighs 5 grams less (maybe) but the putter FEELS INCREDIBLE! Tom said he had never done this to a Cameron Beach before......

Actually, I've got a Newport Beach - but mine is not beached through the sole. I'd think that a full cut through the sole would certainly result in a brighter tone.

Now, two cut's might just get that putter to really sing! :D

That one is certainly unique. Are both cuts through the sole of the putter?
