I would say keep the SG5.
I have the 3.5, and to be honest, I don't think I would ever get the SGX or SGX/w. Way, way to many problems posted about these units in SkyGolfs forums. Realiabilty would have to greatly improve before I concider them. If I ever upgrade, it would more than likely be the Breeze. But will watch that over the next year to see if it is a solid unit like the 3.5/5, or plagued with problems like the SGX's.

I have the SG5 and decided to go to a Leupold GX-1 rangefinder. I like getting the exact yardage to the pin and this unit delivers. My suggestion is to get away from Skycaddie and go with a laser rangefinder. You will save about $40.00 per year although the score keeping and handicap features of Skycaddie are nice to have.

I upgraded from the SG5 to the SGX a little over a year ago and have never had an issue. The X has dropped in price and now they also have the expansion pack for it that has Dynamic RangeVue and PinPoint for loading pin locations like the SGXw.

Thanks. That was one of the reasons why I was thinking about upgrading to the SGX.

Those problems have kept me waiting this long before thinking about upgrading to the SGX.

For me; The yearly "vig" to use a skycaddy became unpalatable. My skill level requires front/center/back and that is it. Would still use my SG1 if not for the vig.

Thanks. I Prefer the Skycaddy over any laser rangefinder. I am not that good enough to need to know exact yardages to the pin. I do like the score keeping and distances I get with Skycaddy. The yearly costs are reasonable for me.
I used to think the same thing. I now use a range finder for shots under about 130 yds. I have found that having the exact distance to the pin for the short game has helped my scores. I would go to strictly range finder, but I spend too much time in areas where I do not have direct line of sight....

My screen went out 2 years ago on my SG5 and I looked at the SGX, but ended up just trading in my old SG5 for a refurb one from SkyCaddie and couldn't be happier ( cost about $85.00). Oh, I also bought the Leupold GX-3 and use that about 80% of the time now. I've really become comfortable using the laser, and it's really helpful on the shorter shots when you're choosing between wedges.

I upgraded from an old SG3 to the SGX. Mostly because the battery cover threads stripped in the SG3 so had to. But I have not had a problem with the SGX, like the ability to keep more than 20 courses and like the color screen. I don't have any complaints and it seems more accurate than the SG3 but I can't prove it.

I have an SG5 (almost 3 years) that never gives me problems so I woulnd't spend $ getting the SGX.
I did buy a Leupold GX-1 with gift cards received at Christmas and I like it a lot. I played today and used them both.

Kept score on my SG5 and used it to compare distances to the green with my GX-1 but I think I'm really going to enjoy the rangefinder.

I thought about going from SG5 to a rangefinder, but I regularly play different courses. The rangefinder is limited to what you can see, it doesn't pick up hidden bunkers, creeks, and a rangefinder has yet to tell me that I have 142 to the 100 yard marker. A rangefinder may tell me that the flag is 138.67 but I'm not a regular wrx player like most here. That .67 doesn't really matter to me.

I've had an SGX for about 18 months with no issues at all, loved it, and then lost it :-( It was replaced with the SGXw - what a hunk of junk - trackback is appalling, many, many issues - read the forums and see the issues. The new breeze is going back to the old (FAR BETTER) SGX joypad. Then my SGXw suddenly stopped working - power button and trackpad stopped working, rest of the unit fine. It 's gone back to Skycaddie and they are sending a new one, which I have confirmed is NEW and not refurbished to the store I bought it from. They will allow me to put it into credit. I have been using my old SG2.5 for the last 3 rounds whilst waiting and its fine, but I miss the map display and the ability to work out carry's etc.

When the SGXw replacement arrives I will go into credit and I'll get another SGX, much better than the upgrade and the WiFi is just not worth the hassle of the dreadful trackpad - it's useful but not enough to put up with all the other rubbish.

SGXw is a brand wrecker right here :-(

I have an SG5 and thought for a second about the SGX and then had a moment of clarity. What does the SGX offer that will help my game that the SG5 doesn't? Answer? Not one thing. Konwing the EXACT yardage to a flag stick isn't crucial to my game, I'm not that good. BUT, knowing the exact distance from wherever I am to the front, middle and back of the green, tells me everything I need to know. I can move the flag on the screen to a close enough proximity to where the flag actually is to give me a good enough range of what to hit. The real key is know how far it is to carry a hazard or NOT go over the green. The SG5 does all that for me.

Am I mistaken? The SGx has the added functionality of moving the cursor on the hole view. . .not the green, the whole hole, showing you distance to cursor, and distance from cursor to center.

I don't think the SG5 had that.

Don't know if that's worth it to you, but I like it. Nice looking unit.

You're correct. SG5 doesn't offer hole view. Had the SG5 and upgraded to the SGX a couple years ago. Love the extra features.

Here is a breakdown from skygolf...

What is the difference between the SG5 and the SGX?
[background=rgb(211, 211, 215)]
The SG5 and the SGX are both high quality devices that will help you play better, but here are some highlights on their differences: [/background]

The SGX has a new stylish casing with a larger, high-resolution color TFT-LCD screen (3-inch; the SG5's screen is a 2.2-inch LCD).

The user interface (software graphics) on the SGX has been completely re-designed, refining the look-and-feel from the SG5.

The SGX features dual navigation, so you can use the buttons like the SG5, or you can direct an on-screen cursor using a multi-directional joystick.

The SGX is the first SkyCaddie that will include up to 30,000 preloaded course maps for a 30-day trial period.

The SGX is capable of storing up to 50 full-featured course maps at a time (plus the basic green courses), whereas the SG5 is capable of storing 20 course maps at a time.

The HoleVue image on the SGX is interactive, allowing you to move an on-screen cursor to adjust the line of play and see real-time tee shot distance and approach shot distance. It also can zoom in and out to help you dial in on any point of the hole. The HoleVue image on the SG5 is static. (Please Note: HoleVue is only available to SkyCaddie members with a SG5 using v. 3 software or a SGX. Not all course maps have the HoleVue feature at this time).

Anyone tried the Breeze over these models?
I thinking about getting the breeze, I got nice trade in e-mail from skygolf to trade in my SG5 for more than I could sell it for and can get a good price on the breeze and they throw in accessories for free (car charger, carrying case, silicone case) and throw in feature pack 1 for free

Might just do it for the wireless.
The wireless would be really nice. The syncing process is pretty slow and kind of a pain. However, I have heard a lot of people complaining about the mini trackpad type thing it uses for input.
The wireless is not all it's cracked up to be. First, they fail to mention that the wireless SSID (network name) can not have any special characters in it, even though the wireless spec allows special characters. I went through 3 "faulty" units before I finally realized I couldn't connect to my network because it had a '#' character in the name. Some numbnut at SkyGolf should read the damn specs.

Next, the SGXw can only connect to networks that do not require web-based authentication. Truely open networks are rare. Most require some type of authentication using a browser, e.g. hotel room number, and the SGXw is worthless in this case.

I upgraded from an SGX to the SGXw. As usually, it took 4 units before I finally got one that worked. The battery on the SGXw is much worse than the old SGX. I used to get 2 rounds in with the old model, but the new model is typically only good for 1.5 rounds. I do like the yardage arcs on the SGXw. It's a quick way to see the yardage to a fairway bunker. The optical track pad is a mixed bag. I can't say whether I prefer the old rubber button on the SGX.
